Teat sealing heifers.

It took 3 and 1/4 man hours to seal 25 heifers this afternoon.
1 at a time through the crush lifting a leg for safety. So roughly that’s 8 an hour. Apart from the time taken it went really well.
Is there a quicker way that’s safe and produces good results
Thanks lazy.

We've done it in a parlour before, small disused fullwood parlour and squeeze plenty of them in, I think we had 8 in a six aside. Someone clips tails and someone follows behind sealing. They kick less than you would think. Probably did about 80 in a day. Loading them into the parlour takes a bit of time

That said, haven't done it in the last two years, the first year due to the OH being ill with food poisoning and last year conscious decision not to as we got away with the first year! Aiming to keep them clean as possible now although this year they are loose housed not on cubicles so we will see 🤞

What are you trying to improve on?
We get around 6% with issues at calving and it seems to be hard to cure with on going cell count issues and lost quarters. It’s quite a lot of our antibiotic usage.it was worse before we started sealing. If I’m totally honest our cubicle management in January could be better as we just aren’t there. this yr of course there’s not a lot else to do. So in theory it’s much better time will.

Fair enough, best of luck!

We do ours through the parlour, just run them in as with milking and most of them just stand quietly. Wouldn't say it takes more than 45 minutes, an hour max, to do 20 of them
