That's the one mursal currently this one is connected to a small wire coming out of the starter switch like I say seems a bit loose and has lost its blob of solder at some point

Oh dear .................
Would you consider giving it power from the large terminal coming from the battery and see it you even get the solenoid to click?

Just as a matter of interest have you another terminal like it on the solenoid doing nothing?
Some of the car solenoids (that can be used on a classic car) had two small terminals one was to work the solenoid.

The other one had nothing to do with working the starter?
It was just put on for fun .............. ;)

All the terminals are in use so as it sits now and how it was when taken apart top stud of solenoid with spade connections has battery lead attached a small wire comes out of this with a connection to fit big spade connection one side of start switch connected to other side then bottom terminal has starter connection and other spade with solder blob which is loose connected to other side of start switch

Oh I see why would they put one on there if it was not for anythingo_O at least I have narrowed it down to what the problem should be anyway!!

Yes if the whacking or chain doesn't work ............

See can you earth a good big bulb by connecting it to the wire going into the motor from the solenoid.
If you had a spotlight bulb, something hefty?
So power the bulb from the battery terminal on the solenoid and earth it on the terminal going into the motor?
If the brushes are stuck, the bulb will be dim or wont light at all, so you can take the back off the motor with confidence.
The solenoid needs this earth path (before the motor starts to turn) to move the stationary starter gear and get it to mesh. So if it cant get this temporary earth it will just sit looking at you.

By the way to keep running the solenoid will have to be bolted to steel bodywork for an earth of its own?

See how you go ..........

Actually I completely forgot about this it's caught me out a few times I will admit with old solenoid set-up
Make sure it's earthed well as @Mursal says

That is perfect mursal well id say I have two problems judging from your picture as the activate terminal on mine is very loose I'm guessing its broken inside. The other larger wire is connected up and starter dosent run so I'm guessing starter stuck from standing on bench for ages. There is no way of getting in the old solenoid that I can see to repair which Is a pain as on my petrol and petrol/ parrafin Fergies you can take apart and clean up. I have ordered the Lucas push button type and whilst I'm waiting for it to arrive I'll whip starter off and test it on the workbench hopefully get that sorted. Thanks for all the help everyone I'll update you with progress

Quick update, managed to sneak down the yard for an hour ( I was walking the dogs!!) Took starter off and it worked fine using jump leads to earth body then the negative straight to terminal pleny of sparks and spun over well. So cant be that so that' something off the list so I'm going to change solenoid and earthing hopefully that will cure the issue

So if u used the starter leaver to engage the gear then hot wired with jump lead to starter if should work
Obviously starting of the seat is dangerous and this is not a permanent solution but it may get u out of the pooh???
Or at least be nice to hear the engine turn over
Also good way to do some welding and burn off part of ur nuts so possibly not the best plan

The thing is I tried hot wiring when it was on the tractor and it didnt work so I'm thinking I may need to look at my connections.

Update on the tef, not having much time this week I had a go at fixing the starting problem this afternoon. Changed battery earth wire, lengthend rod to engage start switch as wasn't touching button. Got a reading of 12.79 v at solenoid which was much better but still nothing. I had ordered a new solenoid but still not arrived so bridged the terminals and the bugger spun the starter. Held in start switch and did the same and engine turned over so problem solved. Just need to fit new solenoid and bleed system and hopefully she will fire up!
