Can landowners(me) refuse BT putting telephone poles across their land(5 poles) to reach (1) oulying property if they dont want them, or do BT have some god given right to do so? tia.

I think you can tell them to fudge off, we done some drains in a meadow and chopped a cable
Didn't know it was there, any way come Monday morning and I found 3 Bt vans and a truck with cable reels the twunts said they had to reconnect the cable and ran it diagonally across the meadow , on the surface, this was a temporary fix to connect the houses I had cut off, open reach are all but unobtainable and it took threats of plowing there cable to get it moved
We agreed eventually to allow the cable to run around our boundary fence in exchange for a way leave

I think the short answer is that the utilities will have statutory powers to do what they want -- but they never want to go down that road as it is expensive, time consuming, and bad for PR. They will always choose to do it through negotiation. Just be aware that what goes around, comes around!

If neighbours already have an easement for the supply, there will probably be a provision for them to come in and maintain it in the small print. But that doesn't mean that you cannot recoup ALL your expenses of them doing so. You'd be surprised what that will cover, but a good land agent (whose fees you can also recover) will know.;)

Try to help them out might be handy if you dig up a cable or such like in the future

I doubt it will make a hoot of difference. You might be helping the men on the job but that will not matter to those back in the office.

The water main for the area used to run through my farm. It was old and prone to bursting. I used to let them in for nothing to repair it. Then they broke fences, left gates open, and stock escaped, so I billed them.

Then I didn't get paid. So I told them, next time they wanted in, they'd be refused. The inevitable happened and the foreman came to my door with the usual request. Him: "Can we go and repair a burst?". Me: "No!". It took a few moments for the refusal to register! I had a couple of lorries, a digger, a few vans, and a team of workers standing around on the road! The workers cheered when I appeared! (Apparently, there was a new boss and others had had trouble getting paid). The cheque book appeared quite quickly, especially when the water company got a call from "The Press" (now who could that have been?) wondering why there was no water!
