looking for a steer as to the above. Had a look at a couple at the highland show this year . I thought they looked reasonable value for money for a farm machine . No thrills easy to attach and detach. I am just looking for a simple machine to knock in a few gate posts and the odd line of fencing without breaking the bank. Any advice on make? Looked at vector and wragg. Decent hammer weights on both c.300/400kg

Putting a knocker on a telehandler will it increase pin wear etc? I’ve got a 20 year old manitou and don’t want to destroy it but most of my work is centre of the hedge so a tractor mounted would be useless?

Had a quote for a Protech p220+ a few weeks ago. Basic machine was £2,395. With the rockspike, 300kg weight and external spool the price went up by £850

We do quite a bit with a post driver on a teleporter. If the carriage/post driver is off the ground there is a bit of bounce on the boom and tyres when knocking posts, but never thought of it as causing wear. If the carriage/post driver is resting on the ground it will not put any strain on pins/boom.

Overall I think it would cause less wear than normal loader work.

What sort is of money was it, if it’s not too rude to ask, looks a decent bit of kit

I have the very one...

on my jcb526

original design it was for a slew digger... I asked my local tractor rep if they could put it onto a wide carry jcb yolk..

that was 5 yr ago I think

am not sure if that was the first one they fitted to a loadall... though I could be wrong

IMHO.... its streets ahead of a 3 point linkage one... its the "mutts nuts"

Got protech p220 here on loader tractor great handy bit of kit for a quick repair or full re fence. Ours was 2400 3 yr ago with 300kg weight hydraulic tilt and rock spike no external controls though just tilt into third service and long pipe to go to rear spool so your hand is no where near it while setting up.

Take it a step farther...

The fencing contractor who does all the work on the estate here has one (not sure the make) mounted on a 14t tracked digger!!

The places he can go to put up fences is phenomenal!! Makes you wonder why anyone bothers with tractor mounted ones - like our own

With even cheap smart phones having spirit levels, gyros etc has any manufacturer came up with a self leveling post chapper yet? Surely the guys doing miles of fencing over varying terrain a week would love a gimbaled autonomous chapper that constantly maintained a true vertical and simply had to be placed above the post and press the hammer button.

I would be dubious about doing any quantity of work with a post driver on the front of our Merlo (or manitou before it), due to metal fatigue and possible overheating of hydraulic oil?

We usually get a 13 tonne digger in to do our fencing, if you have posts and all laid out in position and lines up, you can eat a serious amount of fencing in a day. The digger is also a bit easier on the ground.

Interesting stuff.
Im looking at buying a Protech P220, to go onto a JCB 530-70 but does the loadall need any special controls inside to have constant pump on the hydraulics?

Yeh Protech have a auto level machines, and a GPS guided machine that is going out in the field very soon.

Not my cup of tea, but each to their own

I have a vector that I converted to use on back and front of the tractor, I welded three lugs on a bale spike with a Euro hitch (after removing the spikes of course) so I put that on the postdriver when I'm using it on the loader. The third valve on the loader seemed to slow the descent of the weight so I bought long hydrauli pipes and plugged it into the back of the tractor.
I'd always rather have the guy on the ground using the controls
It's very good on the loader for corners, banks and across some drains
