Don't the old Cats have a gear train type transfer box that gave some expensive trouble, or did I dream it?

We have one... it's had a hard life loading straw and towing trailers.. 8000 hrs and never had any mechanical trouble... I can only speak as i find..

We've also got a newer th330 and it's nowhere near as good... but apparently it's a badged JLG

Does the OP actually need the reach/height of a telehandler? The Matbro could be quite useful at that money although am I right in think one of those early models had a very poor transmision?

I would not buy a telehandler without the reach option - as it would be no different to buying the loader for the tractor if that was the option.

Struggling to understand why you're not VAT registered. If you're a farmer, surely it's a no brainer - everything you sell is zero rated (so the customer doesn't care) and most stuff you buy isn't (so you get a 20% cash back). On this alone, you'd be looking at £1600 of difference.

I'm not a farmer though?

I just play at making hay for the horses - and looking to get some animals later on once the property is sorted!

Even without the extra reach, a handler has far more lifting power, stability, ability, endurance and safety compared to a tractor loader. They are built purely to lift and push, where as a tractor loader, although brilliantly handy things to have, are much more compromised when it comes to hard loader work.

The early ones had a Chrysler transmission, which was OK if you came to a complete stop before changing direction (which your average stockman didn't!) The later Clark transmissions were pretty bombproof as long as you kept oil in them, but the headstock was very weak on the old Matbros.

I had one just the same a few years back, ts 260, mine was a reliable machine, check the boom pivot at the back, this was a weak point, mine needed welding but was ok, check which engine it has, perkins was the better, the weaker brother had the ford engine.
