Tell me about chafer sprayers

Getting to the stage where my old Bateman is due for a change. Have spotted some 2nd hand chafer sentry 5000s with 36m booms, and wondering about them.

Are they any good?
What is a pressure based system like compared to flow?
Anything to watch for?

Not having an engine, wheel motors, etc etc looking like a bit of a plus, as is a bigger and stainless tank.

Any thoughts would be most welcome!

Thanks

@Brisel

Nick Byrne at chafers a really helpful guy. Can PM you his number if you want? He probably sold sprayer your looking at and will know it.

I bought a new sprayer and was pressure based. Had quite a few issues with electrics and control box. Arag controller. Dealer changed it to flow based and it's like a new machine. Well it is new so it should. No problems since changed.

Guardian here. Very pleased indeed with it.

Previous sprayers been traded in at this age as they became unreliable whereas the Chafer looks like new.

Pressure vs flow isn’t really much of an issue.

As above backup is excellent.

They hold their value well too.

the one we had with pressure control was no bother, same make as yours. guess we were lucky.

Only problem I've had with flow control is it can't regulate pressure very well when operating a single section. 4m.
I agree. My second Chafer had to have flow control fitted as well as pressure control as the Topcon X25 had a software fault. LH Agro and Topcon covered the cost of that mod. The flow control did most of the work but below a certain volume the pressure control would take over.

I have flow and pressure control fitted to my Chafer too. It came with pressure and flow was fitted by Chafer later.

The idea was exactly as you describe, for Flow to be the main control and for Pressure to take over below a certain volume (i.e when running a single section). Sadly however that doesn't appear to work very well - the two seem to fight one another and so when pressure clicks in, it opens the regulating valve which causes it to switch back to flow, which shuts it down, so it switches to pressure and then the cycle repeats and repeats whilst applying an incorrect rate all the time.

So you bought a trailed horsch

yes - horsch boom has better stability and height control frankly and at 36m that really mattered for us (but it was also significantly more expensive)

it was a close call vs a Chafer however, they were the only 2 brands i even considered

Great to hear a Uk company being promoted.Years ago early 90’s we went from a 12mtr spryer to a 24mtr Chafer sprayer , and although the paintwork was poor ,when I complained they took it back in the winter and resprayed it, what’s not to like , with a company you can talk to the main man if you have a problem.
A rareity this day and age.

Chafer are really well built, the stainless tank is a work of art. We were very tempted to go with one the last time around but it would weigh 750kg more than the Knight Trailblazer that we were also looking at, the extra weight could be an issue in some of our fields so went with the Knight (delighted with the Knight)
