Tell me about Hartpury.

Daughter is currently doing A levels and has her sights set on a particular equine course at Hartpury starting next year. Wife and daughter are going over at the end of the month for an open day and a look around Gloucester. Any pointers? Good points / bad points? Know nothing about the place / area, just thought I'd ask.
TIA.

Son now 26 did Ag betec at Hartpury he says it’s the best thing he ever did (went to uni after) they have spent millions on the site in the last few years. I know a number of current and recent students all of them have really enjoyed it. And the teaching still seems goid

Even i could tell that there were a lot of very very expensive horses there.

Mixing with all the other non ag and horse courses i think is really good. Being away from home for the first time can be challenging for both the student and parents be prepared for ups and downs. In our time the pastoral care was really good, i have heard it may not be as good now.

Why don't you go as well to see for yourself? Nothing like seeing it with your own eyes or getting a gut feeling about a place in person (y)

Well I went there, enough said! since being developed it has become what I think is a fantastic place for the young, 1 daughter did sport and fitness, and another daughter did Ag, sadly Ag wasn't quite so good, but she did coincide with every one having to stay in education when they didn't want too, great facilities and just out in the country enough to be a relatively safe environment, horsey bit, very high standards I believe at least the infrastructure is anyhow, I grew up in Gloucester, lots of history, busy semi industrial place, very working class, I like it but some don't, my dad was prison chaplain there for 25yrs!

My view is not aimed at Hartpury, but there seems to be quite a lot of equine based courses that lead to not very much in terms of employment. Having seen many former students of equine over the years, keep it (equine) as a hobby.
I agree entirely - it strikes me as a largely exploitative industry, relying on young enthusiastic people to work for very little.
Not a career path for most.

@SteveHants

If I’m not mistaken.

You are not mistaken.
I am an HE (University) Agricultural Sciences lecturer there.
The Equine department do have a good reputation for research and I have the feeling that we are something like the biggest Equine provision in the world. There's a lot of facilities that go with that (rehab centre etc) and the staff seem to have lots of genuine industry experience/knowledge.

Other than that, I can't talk specifically about the dept and what they offer because I am not involved. The best thing to do would be to visit and have a look around. They often have current students you can chat to as part of this.

I can (attempt) to answer general questions you might have though?

There or BCA. Both offer similar courses.
There are some interesting on the side alternatives in the barefoot world but these are not offered as far as I know.
Eg; KC Lapierre.
Dear Monty has got old so he’s not in the running but that thought process still has legs.
I wish her well in her endeavours👍

Grew up in a small town near Gloucester and it was a common place for kids from school to go, had a decent reputation, that was nearly 20 years ago though I still hear good things. Gloucester is a fairly standard small city, it has some more run down bits and some nice bits, particularly round the cathedral, now famous for Harry Potter, and the docks which was regenerated a while ago. People are generally friendly, I like the place.

The surrounding countryside is totally unbeatable anywhere in the world in my opinion.

Would love to but someone has to be here, if i was to go it would be a one day million mile an hour thing whereas wife and daughter are flying over to Birmingham and getting the train down for the open day and then staying overnight and the next day to have a plunder around and as you say 'get a feeling for the place and people'.
