Temporary combine insurance for harvest

Last November I rang the broker and took the combine off cover switching it to a newly acquired teleporter. No charge as just a straight swap. I thought there's no point in paying for cover while it's laid up. I intend to put the same combine back on cover next week for a months cover. Having not cherry picked the peak risk period before, how will insurance company react? Combines worth about £7000. What premium would you expect for a month?

We insure hired diggers on a weekly basis for around £15. Maybe different if you own it.
Before someone climbs the steps it needs insured

When I swapped the insurance over to the jcb the broker must have thought I'd parted with the combine, so no questions asked. There's little or no risk the rest of the year as it's stood in back of a dutch barn with no fire hazards.
Conveniently my insurance expires 1st October anyway so only has to run till then.
Hopefully another way of chipping away at costs.

There used to be a saving having the combine 3rd party fire and theft all year and then upgrading to fully comp for the 6 weeks of harvest. It would be worth investigating on an expensive machine, but i wouldn't have thought it worthwhile on a lower value machine.

Monthly direct debit…..cancelled….
Breaking t he terms and conditions of an insurance policy isnt the wisest thing to do!. It may affect your ability to get insurance in the future. You will most certainly pay more if you have a history of breaking terms and conditions!
We use NFU and can cancel at any time but worth checking to ensure you dont fall foul!

A £7000 combine will cost £100- £150 for comprehensive cover year round, hardly any cheaper if it is put on third party, fire & theft. Most Insurers will refuse to cover a combine for only the harvest period as this is obviously the high risk period, some will charge same premium for harvest cover as for year round cover. We do see quite a few claims over the winter period for vermin damage on higher value modern combines so I would never advise anybody not to insure over winter. The other problem you can encounter if you have taken the combine off cover after harvest is that the winter service is done and damage found to drum, concave, straw chopper etc which would normally be covered by Insurance, if you have taken the combine off cover my chances off getting Insurers to pay that claim are fairly low!

Looking at your figures, I would have expected to have been billed for an additional premium when I switched the combine insurance to the teleporter valued at £15000. Seems I got off lightly.

You are right, premium generally worked out on value. But depending on how long you had to go until renewal when you swopped machines over Insurers may have not bothered charging as cost may have been minimal.
