if this appears in a new fbt on old farm buildings that your paying rent on, how can they expect the tenant to pay for the bill and pay the rent on the building?

If they put it in and you sign it, it's agreed.
There are all sorts of differing clauses in 1986 tenancies.
I pay rent to live in the farmhouse that goes with the farm, and am expected to pay half the bill when Landlord wants to redecorate.
It's like giving the estate an open check, as they are not obliged to inform me of costs, and they don't, an incredibly archaic system, but I signed to it.

If you rent a commercial building you are responsible for repairs, maintenance and insurance as standard.

I'm not saying it's right for farming, but that's how it works so they probably got the idea from that.

I know where you are coming from. I once looked at a farm on the crown estate and the tenant was responsible for repairs. Fair enough if they are in good condition but this place had a large range of old building in bad repair. Just maintaining them at the current level was a risk never mind if they deteriated further and you were made to repair it would have broken you!

i understand on new, modern building, but to put it on a load of fudgeed buildings is taking the pee surely
Insurance aswell?
I always thought it was the landlords job to have his property insured, now it looks like you have to repair buildings that are already in disrepair and insure them then mend them to a higher standard than the condition you got them in WHILE paying huge rents with no chance of a profit for repairs etc!

Declare the buildings redundant? Failing that agree to it, get loads of pictures taken to show current condition and say you will maintain them to that exact standard but won't improve them at all?
