Tesco have been urged to pull all their own label honey off the shelves after tests reveal, that it is widely adulterated with sugar syrup, according to The Times today.
Now why am I surprised

It’s because they sell food at a reasonably competitive price. I can’t speak for the clientele of every store but I’m willing to bet those in the one I occasionally visit wouldn’t know the difference between honey and sugar syrup or even care too much tbh. I doubt I could tell either.

Why wouldn't they all down to price no different to farmers going mole valley as it's cheaper than say using the dearer independent ....

I don’t particularly care for honey, but compared to Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, m & s, and a few others their syrup is thinner and appears watered down.

I shop in Tesco for Vegemite and Frank Cooper's Marmalade, all the rest in Lidl or Aldi and save a fortune

You can be fairly certain every supermarkets own brand honey is a long way off even 50/50 honey/syrup. Probably more like 80/20.

Guaranteed, it won't be Tesco's fault. They'll probably blame it on the bees and get away with it.

I doubt that it will be, other than their (& other retailers’) policies of continually driving prices down.

I suspect the honey producing company that won the contract was happy to stick extra sugar in the jars, in order to increase their slim margin. They will have been contracted to supply ‘honey’, whatever the technical description of that is, not a product with extra sugar added.

Which again, was a dodgy supplier, cutting corners and falsifying records in order to increase their margin. You could argue that the retailers’ driving down their suppliers’ prices were responsible for that of course, but it was a dodgy supplier that did the deed.

Doesn’t a lot of honey have a certain amount of sugar added anyway, or did I just imagine that?

Here’s a conspiracy for you:

the test for genuine honey is whether it has pollen in It. Honey is filtered for bits and sh1!s, the odd bee leg etc, but not to filter the pollen. To filter pollen costs big money and removes the flavour and stability of the honey. In the states a test showed that 76% of honey had no pollen in it at all! The conclusion was that it was Chinese honey illegally imported and had had the pollen filtered to hide its origin. Much of US honey is actually honey flavoured high fructose corn syrup.

Tesco are expensive, the quality of the fruit, veg and meat poor and the service average. Mother insists on shopping there but only because it is the closest supermarket to her house.
