TexX ewes - which Tup to use?

I assumed the Texel ewe's you bought were Texel /mule, why rule out Texel on them.?

Are we going back to the start?

This will be another 20 pages before long :ROFLMAO:

Aye out of Scotch Mules.

I had 20-odd running already, and used Texel on them previous years. They were harder lambed. But, I'm lambing these early and want something faster growing.

I like the Texel, I'm a strong believer it is the best Terminal sire we have - but when you go 3/4 you do add in more problems for little extra gain, IMO.

And lastly, I wanted an experiment and a new challenge.
Some will argue iv certainly given myself that picking Suffolk (@neilo ;)) but it's 19 years since we had last had one here. Been all texels and Lleyns since (ignoring the BFL's which were here upto 2006). Life gets boring if you do the same thing all the time. Time to mix it up a bit

I see maybe you had said that at the beginning of the thread, it was so long ago I forgot, it will certainly be interesting, the danger is if it goes really well you'll be thrown into complete confusion about what to do next. In my limited experience of them Suffolk out of Texel /mule grow like stink with real solidity ( provided the right tight skinned sorts are used, which you have)

No - no confusion. If it goes well/works i will edge up to 100 texX ewes (and start breeding my own). Leaving 200 pure Lleyns lambing to the Texel (y) if it goes really, really well - i might go to 150. But that is the absolute maximum i can/will go.

What a twot!!
In my defense I've a lot of crap going on and I need more sleep....
I'd be tempted to put some lleyns in with them....
Apparently, and I have no personal experience of this..the Suffolk x lleyn Is a very good fat lamb...I'd be interested in the results especially as if it's a nightmare it will be yours not mine!

:ROFLMAO: No worries dude.

Suffolk on a Lleyn ewe can be very good, i remeber Skodas pictures on the other forum and was mighty impressed. But iv been led to believe you need to watch the type of tup you use on Lleyns - the lambs can be quite leggy

To be fair, as you know, when Suffolk's and indeed other terminal tups are concerned, you need to be careful on your choice anyway!
I do like the look of the tup in your avatar, he's grown on me but not enough to try one although in your new role of Suffolk society chairman and head of PR, I think it's your duty to try him on a few lleyns and report back on your findings

There may be one or two have found their way into that batch ;)

Purely by accident, of course... as the buggers went through a gate I had somehow left open :rolleyes:

By using my contacts between society's I feel a joint PR opportunity to convince you all of the joint Lleyn-Suffolk benefits!! Courtesy of Skoda from the other Forum, whom some of you will know/remember, via the Lleyn Society website:

That wee dude in my Avatar has really grown on me too, he has an awful lot going for him. He was his breeders favourite lamb from this year's crop aswell, so hopefully that says something.

Your spot on breed type/selection is very important. The lambs off these guys could be a bit leggy, if I'm honest, from the wrong ewes - but on the Texel crosses it shouldn't be an issue.

I will be totally honest, as things unfold. If it's a disaster you can all tell me "told you so"... aslong as the collective offer me counseling! Pictures will be put up of the lambs as they grow and reach point of sale, too (y)

Nah it wont be a disaster but with all this coverage on him he's most likely going to be dead next week, broken a leg or being himself get pneumonia and give up when a bit of cold weather comes along..anyhow its that time of year for a 'how do you get the suffolk out the stable?' type thread:LOL:

:ROFLMAO: harsh!

He is staying outside, so if he drops dead I can just scoop him up with the telehandler...:D

Both these boys are still in with the TexelX ewes, relaxing and enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done it seems  they've been out a month, come Saturday (5th) - they stopped working a week ago (y) (with a possible 2 ewes never served - they are fat as hell... or worse, theye were served by the 'infertile' texel teaser )

Texel tups have been out 3 weeks with the commercials, and 2 pures, and almost all their ewes are marked too!

Lleyns are busy as we speak, having been out 2 weeks (should've only just be out, but I couldn't keep them in anywhere!! So instead of risking injury jumping fences and dykes, I put them to the ewes)
