TexX ewes - which Tup to use?

If they can't handle weather - then neither can their lambs, which means they aren't fit for purpose. That's why I don't work with BFLs or Charollais.

1 Beltex should handle it fine. The other, which was barer skinned when I bought him, I don't think would - I half thought he had been trimmed to be as bare for sale, but no he is just bloody bare (and a few lambs were bald at birth).

It's a culling offence here.
Bring him into longtown when I’m there for the autumn sales I’ll look after him for you.

I'll get a pic of him later...

Need to see how I get on this autumn at the sales, I've had a fair clear out this winter. Need a Cheviot, Lleyn and Texel (all for breeding pures/tups/ewe lambs) - might need 2 Lleyns and 2 Cheviots - so there's 3 big cheques to write already

The Beltex isn't a definite cull, because i might not be able to buy anything better to replace him. But I will be looking

I lamb Texelxmules outside to Beltexes and if the weather is dodgy use lambmacs. Only used 3 this year, but I know people who say the same as you

Here's one for you all then....

Suffolk, BFL x tex and mule hoggs to tup in autumn time been offered a couple beltex x texel tups - am I mad?

Am I even more mad to think about putting them over pure tex ewes?

IMO it’s would be the texel bit in the tup that would worry me on the suffolks & the texel x’s. I use Charolais x Beltex tups that would be a better x, but I haven’t lambed tegs to them.
Are they a year old now or are they born this time?

Slower than promised bit here he is...

The beltex I dislike.

He's been treated the same as all the other tups and has a bit of a 'poor do-er' look to him

The Beltex I like.

Fair difference when they're stood together - but I'll wait and see what they both look like together, with their coats off

They're in for shearing this afternoon... along with the rest of the pack

Wish me luck 🙈

Done! 12 tups and 1 cull ewe (lame, waiting on her walking so she can go). Wouldn't even be shearing an hour - did 8 in about 25mins then had a break. Did the last 5 at a leisurely 15-20 mins. They all tipped up and sat fine, except 1 Texel fought a lot when tipping him over, but sat fine once on his arse. One or 2 dirty bums, but the grass has gone very lush here in the last couple weeks

The Beltex I dislike was the worst shearing of them all

Quite a difference between them and it's pretty clear I'm right in not liking him

He doesn’t look great, did they both come off the same farm?
