TexX ewes - which Tup to use?

I need my raddle marks to last until lambing so I use spray makers to back them up when I take the Rams out and if they need it I'll do it again at scanning

I usually use Rurtec Mating Mark crayons, they last very well - right through to Shearing.

But these ewes I just wanted something so I could see how they tupped up, so bought some un-branded/blank boxed cheap crayons... I'm still surprised how they've faded, considering how little rain we have had.

So, today marks 4 weeks till S-day (Suffolk day) :nailbiting:

Not too much to report, had all the ewes in last week and gave them an injection of Trodax. Gave me a chance to put my hands on them and check conditions.

TexX ewes are very fit, verging on too fat.
Inbye ewes are a little on the lean side for my liking so I started feeding them at weekend.
Hill ewes are about right - but they have been getting (and need it!) 1lb/head for almost a fortnight.

(I had been going to scan this year, but I have been struggling with illness and felt I had missed the chance by time I was healthy again).

The TexX ewes will be back in next week for Covexin8. As will the other ewes as and when...

Not sure if it will be of any interest, but this year I'm mixing my own feed.

1 tonne of Distillers Maize Grains & Beet Pulp (mixed @ 18%), mixed with 1/2 tonne bruised barley (we buy it in bruised to feed to young cattle, so that's why it's bruised and not whole)

Into this I am incorporating 90kg of Rumenco EweLiq 16 molasses.

Here is the molasses analysis

Got a snacker 2nd hand at the end of the summer, you've all seen one before but here it is. Happy enough with it. My feed bridges a little, but iv seen a friend use his with cobs - and it's no worse really. Carry a stick on the bike and job is grand. Works great with the diesel bike

How are the ewes getting on cleaning it up, is it much of a problem? Just thinking about similar as have plenty bruised barley on farm but no whole. I spoke to our rep who said I'd have barley growing all over the place and in the same breath said he's got 18% rolls :rolleyes:

The ewes are going daft for it - no surprise with the molasses on it

Cleaning up very drop! Much better than I hoped. I used to just feed the Maize Grains & Beet Pulp @ 18%. The maize is very mealy and you could see waste the following day where they had left the powder...

I will see if I can get some pictures for you tomorrow(y)

Barley bought today @ £148/t (collected by us)
Maize & Beet (bought in 8t loads: 3t Maize, 5t beet) @ £200/t IIRC (collected by us)
1000l (1.3t) molasses @ £460 (delivered in bulk, pumped into our own tanks).

It works out at £183.73/t.

I ran it by the liquid feed specialist and nutritionalist at Rumenco and he said it would be perfect for in lamb ewes - I was slightly concerned about Protein levels, they are a touch below 16%, and I would have liked it to be higher. He didn't feel it was anything to be concerned with.

Pictures are always good. What levels are you feeding it at?

Inbye ewes are just onto it, they are getting 0.6lb/head. Hill ewes are on 1lb/head - going to step them upto 1.25lb/head though.

Currently watching the ewes like a hawk to make sure feed rates are OK - it is a better/more complete feed compared to what I usually use, so hopefully won't need to give them as much?:scratchhead:

More like powder, kind of like you've bruised barley too much. We get it in 25kg bags because we don't use much, but you can get it in tonne totes or a bulker load. Fed at 100g per lamb carried.

What's the protein % of it? I imagine I wouldn't need much at all mixed in. Powdery is good - it would soak up more molasses (y)

Keep us in the loop. I'm about a month behind you so can see how you go and if you go with the soya (y)
