TexX ewes - which Tup to use?

It's difficult to know how much Texel has been used to create a more acceptable Lleyn. There is a case for using Lleyns over first-time lambers, but they have little other advantage.
I don't think they're that bad. Ok some of them are if you could find the old fashioned type that were like improved Welsh but had a lot more lambs I think you'd like them as well (I don't know what sort of farm you have though) But they are very hard to find now. Some of the ones with texel in them are quite good but don't have as many lambs as they should I find and they don't hold condition as well as you'd expect. The really big lanky mule type are just awful sheep all round. A bit like a white blue face Leicester.

If agrititor has even tried a Lleyn, I'd put money on his infinite (and exceptionally poor) wisdom picking the lanky BFL types.
Poor do-ers which offer nothing - fit the bill with every criticism he comes up with.

But I do appreciate greatly his time and effort watching this thread to pop up with opportune negative comments

Is a lleyn tup any good over blackface ewes?

The very first Lleyn Crosses here were out of Blackies. Lambed along side the Mule lambs that first year, it was huge step forward. Better at lambing time - hardiness at birth, a will to live.

Smaller, squarer lambs come speaning which sold as well in the live ring as anything else (fat) and fleshened easier than the mules to get to finishing. The skin's were a bit varied and the head was similar to a Texel out of a Blackie.

The cross made exceptional mothers. If I had no choice but to run Blackies on hill and a cross bred flock on better ground - the cross would be Lleyn.

No idea, but isn’t that what @Nithsdale Farmer ’s flock is bred up from?

No quite. We put the Blackies down the road quite quickly and bred from the Scotch Mules.

Every resulting cross away from the BFL we could see noticeable improvement in the sheep.

What’s the reason for now crossing the Cheviot in? Need for more hardiness? Renewed hybrid vigour? Can’t find the “right” lleyn?

Fresh blood as I've been breeding/using mostly my own Lleyn rams for 10yr.

Lleyn tups of the type I like/want are getting harder to find - and harder to buy... typical society's maybe not going quite in the direction I like (that can stand for all breeds).

Fully intend to continue criss-crossing between NCC and Lleyn.

Many happy returns of tomorrow, mate

I'm breaking out of my comfort zone, usual scenario is that I see it's someone's born-day, think "I can't say it yet, they haven't got there yet" and totally forget

not this time 🙂

Thank you for the birthday wishes.

Sadly no partying for me.
Got a game of curling, so that's my excitement for tonight. But if I hadn't came on now whilst getting ready - it would've been tomorrow and you'd have thought I was out being wild chinned 🤣
