I wonder if she is actually aware of the crimes and exploitation the Empire carried out in her own country, but may be she doesn't like to associate herself with her origins. :scratchhead:
Different times, I dont think there is anybody alive that thinks what happened over 100 years ago would be acceptable today, perhaps the Roman's should apologise for their empire and get down on one knee, do the germans get down on one knee at every opportunity to apologise for their genocide, how about the Ruskies and Stalin ?

Oh, definitely, I don't feel embarrassed by Empire, but likewise we have to accept the somewhat unpalatable truth and legacy as well.

What the fudge?!

What 'unpalatable truth'? What legacy??

What happened in the past has fudge all bearing on what any of us can do today. Do you think I run around bearing a grudge with Germans or the Japanese or Argentines? Nothing to be gained from trying to scratch up the past. Lots of nations treated many others and their populations deplorably. Are the Spanish supposed to pay up for their invasion of the New world or something?

There is no thing worse than fake sympathy. There is no man alive today that bears any blame for what happened generations ago, no matter how despicable.

There are plenty wealthy men alive today, who owe their wealth, power and influence to the empire.
There are millions alive today, who owe their poverty to past empires. To have an empire means to forcibly transfer wealth from one nation to another. It laves a permanent legacy.

I would hope she means she is disgusted by the violent aspects of the protests undertaken by a fringe minority, rather than being disgusted at the idea behind blm.

So you would find it quite acceptable for say, the Germans deny responsibility of the Holocaust or the IRA campaigns to now be seen as legitimate and acceptable. We all have to accept we have historical blood on our hands and others may view us differently because of it.

If there hadn’t been an empire, the IRA would never have come into being in the first instance.
If there hadn’t been an empire, there wouldn’t be any NI Protocol today. Empires create permanent legacies. Legacies that come back to haunt.

You could say if there hadn't been empires of France, uk and Spain ireland would still be full of people instead of them all buggering off to the US also just think about all the descendants of the slaves in the USA that have a far better life than the black natives that are still in Africa should they feel shame because they have a better life than those left in Africa?
Humans have always killed each other it's called evolution and survival of the fittest, its one reason we have the modern trappings of life instead of living in caves still, we all benefit from that and you need to remember that while some brave Irish fought against Germany YOUR country took the cowards way out and claimed to be neutral, had it not been for the british empire and then the Russians and finally the US we would all be speaking German now, had the Empire not existed in 1939 we may well have not held out

I am yet to meet a British person who has tried to deny anything that was done in the name of empire or for anything the British did in WW2 or similar. There is nothing to apologise for but that is quite different from trying to deny or downplay something.

I've never seen anyone try to deny the holocaust, undoubtedly some peculiar individuals do try to deny it but that is their concern and they are no doubt treated with contempt as a result.

We don't deny it as we think there is nothing to deny, because we always rely on our own view of history.

I wouldn't like to stand up before an Irish African audience and try and justify the excesses of Empire with that hypothesis.

Have you actually looked at how the Mughals ruled India? I think very many Indians see Britain as a liberator of India,
We have many things to be ashamed of there, but many more to be proud of too.
