Is it only a farming thing where if something smells bad, footrot, lambs sticky bum, rotten lambs etc you have to smell it to see actually how bad it is? 3 of us here all do it to see how bad that smell actually is yet the casual labour who don’t do any farm work except for lambing don’t smell test things?

Washing your hands using toothpaste helps to get rid of the smell (well, masks it)

The girl here sniff tests everything but has a poor gag reflex so usually ends up being sick
yesterday it was a tennis ball sized lump of colostrum under a lambs tail which I pretended to eat, it’s just like caramel I told her, split it up for the dogs and it was stuck between all their teeth

Sterilising gel works really well. Sometimes we get the odd surprise when lambing outdoors and you think it’s fine but rotten inside and the small antibac gel work well for it

Some of us have no sense of smell so get the job of removing rotten lambs then wonder why nobody comes near me for a week.

I’ve posted it plenty of times before, but a good barrier cream like Dermashield, applied before ‘diving in’, prevents it permeating into your skin. It just washes off under a tap afterwards.
The same product also stops your skin drying out/cracking from the continual wet/dry cycle over lambing too.

I got bollocked the other week for using several different types of the Mrs’s fancy shampoo and body wash stuff too try and get rid of the smell. I’d only been in bed 10 minutes when that little grumpy voice piped up “you still stink of sheep.”

I killed a skunk with the swather one year swathing canola. Forgot to pull the body out of the row and wife picked it up and shoved it thru the combine. Had to dump half a hopper full rather than contaminate the whole bin. Combine stank real rank for days until it got steam cleaned. Having to pull a rotten lamb when I was supposed to be taking my family out for Sunday Lunch , already had my suit on washed ready to go, well the final straw , they had to go , every last one of them , peg leg went in the freezer
