Was going to change my ecr25d Volvo earlier in the year.dealer tried to persuade me to go electric with an identical machine powered by electricity.when I looked into it the machine woukd do a maximum of4 hours work before running out of power.the price was pretty much double of the current diesel powered one too.decided to keep what I got due to unavailability of new machines but I could order another with a hefty deposit and may get delivery in February,May or even December next year and Volvos order books were all shut too.

Electric powered is great up to the point it needs batteries and those batteries are too big to hold with one handed while changing them.
I do wonder if there are more circumstances where plant could used effectively on a form of umbilical power supply. I doubt that will ever include around fields though.
There is an interesting video of a conversation with Sir Anthony Bamford of JCB. In it he says that for anything but the smallest excavators, by the time they have installed enough batteries to achieve a decent work output and increased the strength of the chassis and running gear to carry them, they will have doubled the weight and cost of the machine. So JCB plans to use hydrogen powered engines as they more or less use existing technology and keep the weights manageable.
