The Beltex is supreme.

At least he should be well covered for come back on that!!

All joking aside, who pays what? Tup was fine at the fall of the hammer,if he wasn't insured by the vendor or the purchaser, would the vehicle insurance cover it? We had a Charollais lamb from the NSA once and dropped dead a week later,no comeback at all, even though the vet said he'd had long term pneumonia. Vendor said we'd have to take him to court for a £300 lamb

‘Livestock in transit’ insurance should cover it, and easier than trying to prise the money from most vendors I would think.

I had a shearling ram jump out of the ring at early Builth 20 years ago, breaking his leg as he did. The NSA vet put him down shortly after.
Of course, he’d be insured on the premises wouldn’t he? Brightwells (the auctioneers) said if wasn’t down to them (despite providing a low ring with a horizontal rail at the top) and directed me to the NSA.
In turn, the NSA said it was nothing to do with them, and directed me to Brightwells. :banghead:
Our (NFU) farm insurance covered it in the end, otherwise I’d still be going back and forth today.

I was quite surprised by Brightwell’s attitude though, considering I was selling 30-35 rams a year through them at the time.

If you fed your tups properly he would have been too fat and lazy to jump the hurdle so it was your fault 😉

Fastest tup death I've heard of was a friend of my dad came from by Kidderminster to the Builth sale for two Suffolk tups. Bought them off the same bloke, loaded one in the Daihatsu, came back with the second and the first one had died. Just to add to it,a member a of the public saw the dead tup being pulled out and reported to the RSPCA that he'd obviously been left in there too long and suffocated like a dog at the supermarket. Case got dropped a couple of days before court date

Only ever had 1 belted ram here, bought him locally as a two shear for £150.
First year I put him out with 25 ewes, and he just stood there at the gate not interested in the ewes at all 🤦‍♂️ went back the next morning to find 1 ewe marked with others around him needing tupped...whilst he was stuck on his back 😂
I thought “Lord Nelson” (as was his pedigree name) was going to be a complete disaster.
BUT, he never ever had anymore problems of any kind, tupped lots of ewes and lasted for at least 3 seasons before I sold him to a friend where he worked 1 more season. His lambs were easily born, up quickly and were good quality as stores.
He turned out to be one of the memorable rams for positive reasons.
I never bought another one though and that was 10 years ago 😂

Remember Tophill Joe (of Texel fame - IIRC £125,000. Was world record at the time)?

His full brother was sold at Carlisle... on the way to the loading bay, he charged/jumped head on into a steel post. Killed instantly.

This trend makes me feel great and not alone. I’ve bought one Beltex in my life, father used to check the sheep for me & rang one day. ‘Know that little butty ram you bought?’ ‘Well he walked up to jeep looked up at me and then just dropped dead’

Left some super lambs behind but haven’t been brave enough buy another since…..
