I enjoyed your photos and explainations when you set up the pigs and hopefully the experienced gained may if you chose be usefull in the future.

Great thread guys. I really enjoy it!

I've seen some posters comment that a B&B contract is merely a means of making an average wage. And yet @Piggy_jags mentions the contractor who has 40,000 pig places and 9 members of staff.

How do the figures stack up for running such an enterprise? I've received the cash flow document from Stockcroft Pigs. I've had a bit of difficulty deciphering it, but if I've read it correctly, there should be a net profit of £7k per 1000 pig place.

Are the pigs ear tagged? Would it be possible to improve selection efficiency by incorporating some sort of auto drafter?

I remember a farm visit several years ago to a birth to bacon indoor pig unit. I think they had recently invested in a multi million pound auto drafter set up, but can't remember the detail or farm name. They were one of the first to use the Sow Lift farrowing crate though. They also kept their own boars and harvested semen for AI on site. Indeed, the theoretical pig wanking demo was the highlight of the visit. My then girlfriend (and Riseholme livestock lecturer) was most excited by it. Anyone have any ideas?

I wouldn't bother with an auto drafter. You'll get all the pigs sorted only for the Lorry or the slaughter house to breakdown and cancel.
To improve returns stick to the pigs be OCD with them.
Start everyday same time.
Mother them and care for them when newly weaned.
Report all your concerns to the Fieldsman and get a reaction

Best of luck.
