A bit of fun here.

While out pulling Ryegrass this afternoon I could see that there are a few anomalous wheat plants, usually taller plants with a bigger ear.
So I started to look for the biggest one I could find.

Here it is, a Grafton Wheat ear at 14.5cm tall,

Can you find a bigger one?

length isnt everything what really matters is the weight and numbers of seeds ,not just in wheat ears aparently

I reckon a better measure is a combination of ears/sqm grains/ear and tgw . some varieties have longer but less grain sites/ ear than others and some have more grain sites on shorter ears so just going by ear size whilst a pointer to final yield is not the b all and end all, I was involved in some trials years ago that showed thinner crops on less fertile land yielded far better than thicker ones mainly due to tgw of the grains and grains/ear(ie less ears/sqm) and yet farmers general response was to sow a greater number of seeds ,which is possibly why the old 12st an acre everywhere held true

Above is true if you're trying to estimate yield, however in a longest ear competition the length of the ear is the only thing that counts.
