The Brexit Negotiations

The Brexit negotiations are about to get under way, and we will be led by a one legged quacking duck Mrs. May, propped up be 10 monkeys from NI.
Meanwhile the EU seems to have got stronger and stronger since we voted out. The populist parties in France, Netherlands and Austria have been given a right kicking by the electorates there. In Germany Merkel seems to be shoving the populists there into the background.
Merkel and Macron versus a one leg Duck and ten monkeys. It's not looking good. Is it?:banghead::banghead:

Macron and Merkel have seemed to indicate the door isn't closed on us staying.

With the enormous split within its ranks, another referendum and then staying in the EU would mean the end of the Conservative party though.

Theresa May isn't capable of negotiating with 10 angry homophobic anti abortionists, what chance does the country have if she tries to deal with the highly organised civil services of 27 European countries.

Grossly offensive. I suggest you delete your post.

From his opening post I now feel somewhat vindicated in "having a go" at him a few weeks back, despite the fact I was also attacked for doing so.

BTW wanted to say kinda sorry for having a go over something I can't quite remember what .. currently having a beer BTW.

Good to see you posting from Portugal. Don't let em get you down ... including me !

Once went to Lisbon to see a young lady and made the mistake of wearing a bright white T shirt walking around ... only to be harrased intently by some chap ... the girl was laughing her socks off when I told her, seems it's a flag for locals of being gay.

@wanton dwarf You are one of those posters with whom I agree on some things and disagree on others, but it matters not. You never take it too seriously because we are not insulting towards each other. On issues where you feel strongly opposed to my views I expect you to be forceful with your arguments/debate. Please continue in this way.

I disagree with my wife several times a week. We often raise our voices beyond what is necessary, but we will have been together for 50 years a week today. How boring it would have been to agree with each other all the time.

Thanks for the reports.

Sometimes it is better to allow peer moderation, than for us to remove a post, @Osca is quite correct.

I dont think Donald will be back.

Sorry, I am not particularly clear why using the phrase "monkey" in this context is offensive? It is evidently not meant in a racist connotation but most probably in a submissive or monkey on TM's back type metaphor . Or does it have some other meaning in NI that I am not aware off. :scratchhead:

I think the term monkey, though it is only conjecture, and in reference to the 10 DUP MP's who are seemingly destined to prop up Theresa May's fatally wounded government, is a derogatory term for someone lower down the food chain yet to develop beyond a primitive primate mental level of social interaction, care, and compassion.

Given the DUP beliefs upon abortion, homosexuality, and even the creation of the planet, perhaps some careful consideration should be given to the validity of the slur?

Given that monkeys are actually very social caring animals that generally do look after the young, old, and infirm without prejudice or expectation, then perhaps it is more of an insult to monkeys?

My own personal view is that we really need to take a step back and look at our society when the government election campaign manifesto is to steal money from the care of the elderly and primary school children, and make health care and education a privilege for the wealthy.

We might as well reintroduce the poor houses, forced labour, and slum housing not fit for 21st century human habitation.

Recent events suggest this has already been happening for years :(

I didn't think the OP was offensive or in any way outside the conventional bounds of political discourse.

The impression I got was that what the objectors actually objected to wasn't that the observations were too near the bone, but that they were too near the truth.

And, of course, the truth can hurt.

Once again a post which says a lot more about the peculiar mindset and in this case, tunnel vision of the person posting than about the subject of the discussion.

[Sigh]...

If I explain why the reference to "monkeys" is probably a witty political allusion (that sails way over the head of subscribers to grim and dim political correctness) it'll show the problems with political discourse these days.

There is a controversy in NI unionism about creationism (the belief that the Earth is 6,000 years old) with the DUP being fervent subscribers to the creation theory of Earth's history, rather than Darwin's theory of evolution from apes (cf. 'monkeys').

I don't object to their beliefs, to which they are entitled, but they are - and should be - open to ridicule: the proper function of politics is not to disseminate information in an even-handed manner, but to convey facts.

The point is, of course, central to the EU referendum - it is precisely because insufficient facts were discussed, and too much emphasis on even-handedness between competing (but wholly unequal) claims, that the country is now completely at sea as regards the various options that are actually available.

On the other hand....perhaps, after reading some of these knee-jerk objections, Darwin was wrong after all about natural selection.
