Absolutely brilliant, unless you are a confirmed republican. Blair got rid of the Royal Yacht Britannia in rather rude fashion. I know or knew a number of ex loyal crew who were given jobs on the Sandringham estate in return and their sadness and enduring loyalty is rare in this day and age. No doubt others were given jobs at Windsor or Balmoral. One of the main functions of Royalty are the foreign visits to promote unity but these are very difficulty to achieve in modern times without a floating base. Britannia did service in the Falklands war and was always available as a backup in emergency. It was a sad loss brought about by a sad politician..

The UK is slashing aid to countries. I this morning listened to Today programme - Tory minister defending cuts to a UNICEF outreach programme to educate poor Bangldeshi's. £50k per annum. As presenter commented Billy Bunter fluse spends that on wallpaper. Minister waffled. UK is becoming sure a nasty state - true in line with the nasty Tory Party (aka UKIP lite) Lose all the soft power and influence - what for - to wrap up in a Union Jack on the poop deck having G&T's. Palmerston would b proud of you and those who support this unnecessary boat. Sad, sad days. .

This is a vital piece of infrastructure spending which will bring jobs and prestige to our tired shipbuilding industry. How much will a £200m bung of overseas aid to be squandered by corrupt governments help our economy or theirs ? This can be a showpiece of our capabilities if handled correctly. Charity begins at home

How much will a £200m bung of overseas aid to be squandered by our own corrupt government as they help themselves ? This could be a showpiece of our capabilities if handled correctly. Corruption begins at home.
Corrected it for you.

That would appear to support my argument.
@arcobob £100 that no such Royal yacht is launched by 31 December 2029.
I will donate to RNLI should I win.
That is not what I said. I would willingly donate £100 to the RNLI tomorrow as I have supported them many times over the years but I think you are entirely wrong because you are against the principle of supporting Britishness.

And there is you problem.
Having a Royal yacht is nothing to do with supporting Britishness as you put it.
After all when I may be out popping rabbits, with Eley cartridges and the Purdey from the Rangie. It may be as effective create jobs etc for uk, but a truly crap use of resources.
So @acrobob up for the wager then?

Not really. Article was from 2019 and likely more yards have downsized during and after this covid stuff is over.
German yards are specially targeting super yachts ... for example

And they have 19 current yards that could tender for the business.

Anyway, it’s all pie in the Sky by our Dear Leader .. rather like his bridge from Scotland to N Ireland, his airport in the Thames, the London garden bridge etc

And you really think that the GB public will sanction a gift to an EU yard? Either you or I have mis judged the British people.

Fairly sure there was a poll regarding foreign aid , 96% said fudge em , rightly or wrongly
This stuff has been going on through my lifetime . Friends have worked in Africa under the banner of VSO and the theme being "help them to help themselves" and here we are fifty years later still dishing out the money because they still can`t help themselves.
