The coming famine

Seeing that it is estimated about 40% of food is wasted in this country perhaps a shortage and increase in price would be a good thing. It would hopefully make people value food more and not waste it or treat it as a throw away consumer item like a pack of socks from Primark ( other cheap clothing suppliers are available).

The question needs to be how bad does the famine need to get before are not making money from increased prices as armed gangs are just walking into your fields and helping themselves.
we have some of the strictest gun laws, in the world, for the legal gun owners, just in case we could, might, highly unlikely, do something silly. The illegal guns, which cause the trouble, are fine, because they have tightened the law, f-ing idiots, rustling will get worse, as prices rise, but the cops wont want to know.

To make any effect it would need such a radical change it would be unacceptable to the masses. Just look at the complaints about the covid measures and multiply that by 100.
I was thinking today about pumpkins and this crass Halloween festival. All that idiotic plastic tat in the shops that will be going to landfill on 1st November. All those pumpkins grown not to be eaten but to be hollowed out and rotted down or incinerated. We still live as masses in about 1629, tempted by bright beads and trinkets and crass commercial fads. Nobody wakes up thinking about wind energy, hydroelectric stations or nuclear power, the problem of plant based foods reliance on fossil natural gas. Oh no. It’s all about cut priced holidays and buying more plastic crap.

Going through town this morning and one house has covered their hedge with some sort of fake cobweb material for Halloween. God knows what it was made out off but I bet it was artificial. Then i thought why couldn't they use wool to make fake cobwebs at least its natural and environmentally friendly.

I can't see how the world can support 7.8 billion people long term far less any more given our demands on resources.

Unless our numbers can be brought down in a managed way I dont think famine and war can be avoided.
Our countries GDP is based on a growing economy. We can't control the population or the housing bubble will burst and rich people will lose a lot of capital. Many people will not allow this to happen.

But unfortunately mother nature does not give a damn about any of that so if there was a widespread drought around the world or a combination of other factors such as not enough fertiliser there won't be enough for everyone. Not saying this is imminent, but we won't be pumping oil forever so unless we change things I fear it will be changed for us

Famine in this country would do us all in the farming industry good. I know I can feed myself from the garden and farm on a limited diet and I am sure if I have not got it a friend will have!. Let the masses starve and they may appreciate us and there gardens.

Do you think so? If some sectors of society were going hungry there might be anarchy and rioting. Not a pleasant place to be.

I worked out the average commute, 23 miles, in the UK has the same Carbon footprint as eating beef or lamb in a meal.

Crazy!
An odd stat to be throwing about. Most of the younger generation that enjoy their work will gladly choose the commute and working/after work drinks over a red meat based meal.

Persuading people to change their diet is the easiest way of making them think they are making a difference. Its too easy to go into a supermarket and buy vegan meals and think you are saving the planet as their production is out of site/out of mind. 'Green' protein that can't be grown in this country, out of season veg/fruit all flown in. The consumer doesn't care. But, tell them to reduce their car usage, seriously reduce air travel or shut power off for 6 hrs a day would cause an absolute uproar. Industry is not going to change as its all about profit, the planet will burn but the shareholders will get their dividends.

I was thinking today and did some research
Globally we consumed 759 million tonnes of wheat in 2020-2021
If fertiliser is globally unaffordable in 2022 what percentage will yield be down in the first year? 25% average overall?
So we could be 189 million tonnes short of wheat in 2023.

If that happens could the cereal price go the same way as the spud price did in mid 1970s

That's scary reading this.
