I was woken this morning by a Cuckoo sitting a few yards from my bedroom window at around 07.00hrs,just as the sun was coming up. I have not been drinking, and have good hearing & sight. This is about a month earlier than normal. Is its early arrival due to the warm air coming up from the continent & hence a tail wind for the bird. I would welcome more info from our more learned forum members.

That could be right, I thought I heard one in my garden in North Suffolk a couple of days ago, then I looked at the date and thought, don't be stupid. Just saw this comment and spoke to the wife who said she had heard it and thought exactly the same. So it would easily time in with this.

Not heard one for several years here. Five weeks till the normal date for the swallows return,
I haven't heard one for years either . Swallows slightly later than that , 6 or 7 probably , but they always seem to have a successful year here, hatching and rearing until quite late . I always wonder if the late hatched ones make it to N . Africa- hope so anyway . When the swallows arrive and leave, always seem important benchmarks in my year . Bit like snowdrops and daffodils really . I noticed on the way to Woodheads that there were a few daffs open now , and a lot just waiting to open . Coupla days like this'll soon do that for them !

There's some footage somewhere of the first natrualist trying to see the cuckoo lay the egg in warbler nest , all black n white think it was on attenbourgh prog. been trying to find it but I can't seem to drop on it , fascinating and worth a watch if anyone can find it .

I was watching a welsh language nature programme this week and it has a regular bird song id slot. This week he was talking about how the collared dove can be mistaken for a cuckoo. I'm not familiar with collared doves so I proffer this with no opinion.
