The Demo Thread

please gents correct me if im wrong, but torque back up is when the engine is under severe load ie up a 1-4 bank which stretches for at least a mile, The lower the figure the quickly the engine dies, hence more gear changing, which to my thinking a Vario gearbox of what ever make will mask, Im old school but as the Americans say there is no replacement for displacement

This took place 5 miles up the road from me at one of the local quarries and I know a few of the machines and men involved. The traffic cones will be about the only thing that will be standard in those races. That and apparently some of the drivers were a bit lacking.
Didn’t realise you were so close to that quarry, you ballyclare side or broughshane side ?

This was my thoughts also, but didn't want to comment on grassmen FB page.

I take it the drivers aren't all the owners of the tractors?

It is a vario gearbox.

What I find strange about it is I find it pretty lacklustre on the road. But on pto work, with square baler, or 1 pass it sticks in really well and keeps pulling.

We didn't buy it for haulage. Doesn't really do any. Just travelling back and forward to fields with plough, drill, baler, mowers.

vario gearbox will have higher powertrain losses than a purely mechanical gearbox, so anything you gain from not changing gears (and usually more) is lost in the drivetrain.
no replacement for displacement is more true for reliabilty than power/torque imo, plenty small modern engines with very good power characteristics but the longevity isnt there, and in tractors the 4 cyls havent quite caught the 6s for grunt yet either

I agree ,but i find the vario tractor masks the power/torque loss by slowing down, TMS/ DTM etc I personally prefer a gearbox tractor on haulage duties ! But hey im old fashioned !!

520/85/38 is next size up what did you put on fronts

looking at a few options for changing tractors at the minute, Been offered 520/85/46 and a 580/65/38, currently running 600/65/38. Like the 600 but can’t get it on bigger Hp tractor and bit wide for spraying although we do get away with it. Gut tells me the 520 with the tall radius will be better or equivalent foot print?

look at 580/85/42 same size diameter as 20’46 or 650/85/38 /
plough with the 580 /85/42 and 460/85-30 on front
your 580 will be 70 profile to match a 520/85/38 or old 20.8/38
a 520/70/38 is same as 600/65/38 or 18.4/85/38
52/85/46 is next group size up at 2 metre tall

Thanks, surprised they offered the 46. They’re stock tractors coming through and maybe what’s available at the price. How do you think the 520/85/46 will perform with a variety of jobs from spraying, top work, ground prep etc. Just concerned on how it will spread the weight going from a 600/38. Dare say it will put the power down well enough on 170-180hp

Just ask John to buy 2 sets for the tractor 650 and a secondhand rowcrops for spraying

I've had this electric utv to play with the last few days. It only does 25 mph but it also barely takes 2 seconds to get to 25. Its good fun but also Chinese so I think I'll stick to a petrol quad this time.
