nearly 10 hrs of steady rain here now, and still raining ! The torrential of yesterday was great, but a lot ran off, with the few soakings, things are nicely damp, done our haymaking, so much happier !

area of a circle is pi r2, so the ratio of the area of top of the dogs bowl to the bottom is a ratio of the square of each diameter (pi and half being constant) So 20mm x 190 squared, divided by 150 squared is 32mm.
probably haven't explained myself very well. i just did 20 x 190 x 190 / 150 / 150 = 32.

Edit - But I haven't taken into account the slope of the sides, but I'm guessing we are only be approximate.
Should be 20 x 190 x 190 / 156.5 / 156.5 = 29.5mm.

Other way round - it’s narrower at the base than the top, so logically the depth in the bowl will be more than the rainfall has been.

I was assuming you had got the equation the right way round, was just wondering how you had worked out how much the dog had drunk!

I have 20mm in my dog bowl which is 65mm high and the diameter is 190mm at the top and 150mm at the bottom. How much rain have i had?
13.5mm

A volume of 382855 cubic mm fell on the top area of 28338 square mm. The volume of water is determined by subtracting the volume of the cone needing to be added to make the dog's bowl come to a point at the bottom, from the volume of the larger cone including the 20mm of water.

Double checked by integration.
