"The farmer is the most important man in the world and always will be"

"The farmer is the most important man in the world. He always has been and always will be."

This was the opening line of an old children's book I came across today, called Warnes book of the farm (see attached - hopefully it's big enough to read).

It goes on to say:

"It has been said that no country can be happy and prosperous if there are not a large number of people working the land and winning from the earth all the various foods it can be made to produce."

always say to the moaners moaning about huge tractors, late night working, moving stock to mess up the school run etc
# I can do without you, but you cannot do without me # amazingly some really can't see that, certain some think food comes from the supermarket, full stop, they just do not understand that farms are producing the food they eat ! I blame schools for a lot of that.

If (a bloody big if) we could get people back onto the land instead of sat in front of computers, most all of our species dilemmas would be easily sorted.

Have you noticed how prevalent are the seven cardinal sins, in society today?
Because too few have sh!t and dirt, under their nails - this trend will destroy nations, before the race is run.

A very true thread title.

The existence of a very big proportion of the world's population depends on one of us, somewhere in the world, putting a seed in the ground, pulling a calf out of a cow, clipping a sheep, collecting an egg, etc, etc....

Now, I don't mind being taken for granted - I don't much care what the city dwellers think or do but all this sh!t we're getting, on what seems to be a daily basis, is really starting to p!ss me off.

I've said it on here before and I'll say it again...........

If you want to criticise farmers, don't talk with your mouth full.

These people are your customers, you can’t do without them.

Without aiming at any individual, the arrogance of farmers that seem to think they are on a God given mission to feed the world does the industry no favours. You are no more important than anyone else and nor is the work you do, especially if it pisses off your customers in the process.

Just sit and have a think about how long people can go without food?
You’re right in as far as the water workers are more important than the farmers, but farmers are a pretty close second.
Now, having reflected, do you want to reconsider your opinion?

That does seem to be the problem - so few people required now to farm food. When more people were involved more people understood. Can't see that process reversing though.

the arrogance of type of people that have moved into our area, is mindboggling, every thing has to revolve around them, if it doesn't suit, letters to the council, complaints to police, we get letters from parish council, asking us to stop using big machines, others will come and demand that we agree a time to suit them, beforehand, and if they are late, for work, or school run, you can hear some 'words' shouted at us.
the trouble is, if you start 'suiting them' it just gets worse

I would put up with most of the crap as long as they paid the correct price for our produce.
But, as has been mentioned numerous times, the price we receive has not kept pace over
the last 20 years with other goods.

Actually Kidd my occupation is much more important than every one else's. Or are you really saying that food production isn't important? So therefore I think I'm important and I make no apologies for it.

It’s my occupation too but I’m no more important than anyone else.
What is important to me is to go about my business without any inconvenience to anybody else. I doubt anybody notices this and I don’t always get the same in return but do unto others and all that.

Farmers are certainly important (As are farm workers that actually do the work on a lot of the worlds farms) but they're just one link in a chain. Take any link out and we're in big trouble.
The way a lot of the world lives at the moment, electricity and fuel are just as important.
Take away transport and you can produce as much food as you want, its no good if it doesn't reach the population and of course if things got that serious people would just come and take the food off you.
Why do people always want to be thought of as the most important?

You could make an argument that food security and land use will become so important in the future that it will be taken out of the hands of the relatively few land owners there are on the planet.
