So all US beef should be taxed the same? Or will the tax be set at producer level?

I'm not about to write a white paper on the detail !

but in principle USA beef produced with growth hormone should not be allowed to compete with UK beef produced without on our home turf. its should be either banned form being imported as it contains substance our government has deemed harmful many years ago or taxed heavily making UK produce a better alternative

Whilst I agree with you in principle the devil is in the detail. If you are only going to tax US beef produced with hormones then the import tax will have to be set at the level of the individual producer. The point is that it is easy to say you want taxes to protect the producers but to do it effectively and fairly is virtually impossible. And then, if past experience is anything to go by, the voters would reject it if it cost them anything.

I don't want taxes to protect producers, I want the taxes to protect health and environment / sustainability - in turn that will protect the producers that look after environment and welfare the best

as I say its already started with sugar tax, I expect more similar taxation to come

Would the scheme that you have proposed tax US beef imports at the national level or the producer level?

But they are quite happy to cover themselves in chemicals that control bodily functions such as sweating or make them look pretty or suntanned without the sun or make their houses smell nice oruse insecticide to kill flies and bugs in their houses or produce noxious fumes so they can drive to work/town or the pretty countryside on some new road that has hardly improved the environment, oh and of course plenty who will smoke various chemicals knowing how deadly they are. While there is a section of society that may want live a pure environmentally good life that they think isnt going to kill them the huge majority want cheap food and dont give two thoughts to how its produced when they are in the local supermarket
I am guessing you live in Essex or Cheshire?

@Speedstar ...... watching Countryfile at all?

May well be a one sided footpath Walker program but the bbc is promoting vegan lifestyle within a ‘countryside’ program that also is showing cows, lambs, pigs etc.

You along with your customers are fecked well and truly. This is happening right now so wake up.

And now there’s a vegetarian pig producer .....

Might well be a crap ‘countryside’ tv program, which I’d agree with, but this is being watched by 5 million people a week.

For every one that puts cows off another puts them on , will not affect our business before I retire , think what you like people need food to eat and that is the top,and bottom of it, can not see you out with the binder or the horse and cart doing your harvest in the next 20 years

Nope I won’t be, but what I will be doing is not eating meat as it won’t be an option for me to choose and we’ll be selling vegan (not organic) combinable crops off the farm.

Writing is in the wall and it will affect your business without doubt.
