The golden hoof?

After rain all day Thursday and another big dollop since the early hours and a forecast that says sleet, snow and then more rain for most of the rest of the day, I'm afraid the 'golden hoof' is likely to be more of a brown, sh!tty colour for the immediate future :banghead:
Anyone wishing to be a sheep farmer think twice. Wintering sheep is not any fun.

For a many years, in arable areas, sheep were "close folded" on forage crops, using hurdles and moved daily, perhaps a forerunner to "mob grazing". This had a high labour cost and dwindled away in the 1930's depression and WW2.
I had some of that as a student in Dorset in the seventies. Had rolls of outsized 'chicken wire' with wooden posts, (think they were called souls?), threaded through. Used to roll it up and carry it to the next position, what a job on a wet day!

Wouldn’t you say that theory still exists regarding labour costs to the value of the stock?

I had 2 years of that as well when I left school (77) he eventually gave in and bought a barrow system, but he took some convincing as it wasn't him doing the work, all home made stakes of cut and split withy.
