Slice scone, cut two 1/8'' slabs of salted butter and install on either side, apply 1/2 to 3/4'' of clotted cream (with crust as mentioned above), make a broad, shallow depression in the cream and fill with home made strawberry jam to overflowing, eat each side individually and then have another one.

I'm feeling quite hungry now after that detailed description! lol

I bought a saffron cake from the supermarket "local food" section last year. At the checkout, the member of staff said she liked that sort of bread toasted and spread with butter ? ? ? ?

She sounded as though from up country, but still ... !

If you was proper proper Cornish they scones would be splits (y)

Where's your etiquette man? You use the jam spoon and cream spoon to take a dollop of each and place on the side of your plate. You then use you side knife to apply, first the jam, and then the cream to the scone (or split if you proper Cornish). DO NOT under any circumstances use the knife to cut the scone in half, it should be broken in half by hand. (y)
YES... BUT, very important this, Cream 1st, and it has to be PROPER thick clotted CORNISH cream, then jam on top, only strawberry jam mind,AND only put on scone enough for one mouthful at a time, thereby getting a LOT more cream and jam! If you have splits, they have to be proper soft splits, which are frequently called half rounds, NOT baps. Advantage of splits over scones .. bigger,so ability to get more of the essentials on, but more difficult to eat in public as altogether more squishy!! Agree that cutting a scone or split with a knife is pure sacrilege and just demonstrates that you wernt brought up right!
