The "I`ve got it" thread...

I didn’t think symptoms for CV included a sore throat, but you’re better placed than me to know the details. Out of interest, what does each test cost?

Private was £149 but "suddenly escalated" to £349.

I`ll be back in the office next week but IIRC the normal Corona tests are around £35 -£58 depending on type and who is requesting. We have a 3 tier pricing structure for internal, other NHS and commercial.

Have you definitely got it?

Won`t know for a while.
Work are only testing inpatients as they need it most, and the antibody test (post infection) is a few months off yet.
On a scale of certainty, and having spoken to our microbiology team, 99% yes.

Spoke to my boss earlier and it looks like I`m in the labs helping out on Monday... its all hands on the pumps for a while.

This thread shows why the number of reported UK cases is rubbish.

Will be loads of people unwell who don't bother going to doctors/hospital.

Hope you Boris gets these kits out so people can test if they've had it or not the better

My brother thought he had it in Melbourne, he had all symptoms but they wouldn't test him because he hadn't been in contact with anyone else who was infected. He's better now.

They do.
1st person in a household with symptoms for 7 days or until temperature returns to normal.
The 1st person has already been carrying it for between 5-8 days to get a shorter "sentence".
Everyone else in the household should self isolate for 14 days as they could be incubating.

@Chae1 the antibody test will provide the true picture as we gain antibodies and/or immunity.
The current "live" test is just a variant of all the other Corona variety tests.
There are 4 "standard" corona`s, 229E, NL63,OC43 and HKU1 that labs test for. Then there are the MERS/SARS "family".

Thanks for the update.

Do we know yet whether it can be caught again once you've had it? You mention there are various variants, which is why as I understand it we can catch a "cold" several times, because it's a different virus variant each time?

Random medical question - if we can test for antibodies, can't we then just extract the antibodies from a "recovered" person, and then share that amongst those who have not caught it yet?

P.S Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Saw on Russia today that the Chinese had sent blood plasma from recovered patients to Italy. So you could be right. How long are people infectious?

Hey @JCMaloney get yourself fit for the new season (y) .

I think you used to work in the food trade ? With that and your medical knowledge, would you be willing to give any comment on this:
All other things being equal, is there any difference in risk between shopping at an outdoor market and an air-conditioned supermarket ?

Depends on the air con & the maintenance thereof. I would guess that depends on the supermarket! I would rather be outdoors to be honest, you have more control there.

The biggest thing is that "it" can only get in through eyes, nose & mouth. Wash your hands, don`t touch your face and keep your distance.

The "social distancing" isn`t working so expect a spike in numbers in a week or two.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer has just agreed with you, saying that you are safer outside than in.
Despite that, we can expect Government to soon make moves to shut down outdoor markets and force us in to supermarkets.
The pub gardens are empty, yet the booze isles in Tesco are yet to be cordoned off.
Anyone still think that the country is run by elected representatives rather than global corporations ?

I was discussing with Mrs cz. If it’s on some food you buy to eat cold and eat it (ie rather than breath it) can you catch it? Or your digestion kills it?

Good question, as food goes towards your mouth you almost involuntarily breathe in as your mouth opens. If that`s enough to dislodge it then its not good.
However it doesn`t transmit well from porous surfaces as it gets "stuck" in the pores. Depends on the food type!

Also lots of variables around temperature, humidity etc. In some lab conditions it can live for a week, in others a few hours.
