You say in the first post that they were only used because they were old and cheap and then admit in your second that they are more capable at off roading, be consistent.Defenders used a monoque chassis and beam axles for the reasons the bloke is describing? They were used because they were old technology and cheap! Loads of codswallop, every other 4x4 manufacturer has it wrong with independent axles and suspension and a mono chassis?
I think if you are a livestock farmer, utilities line worker, forestry worker, mountain rescue etc. you are going to want the most capable off road vehicle as what you will encounter in a day will be markedly different than having to turn on the grass during the school run as it takes 50 feet to get your badged SUV pointing in the opposite direction.
