Interesting aside as to the NI situation breaking into other spheres. The deadlock in settling the NI Protocol is stopping EU collaboration with UK research institutions. My the Troubles have a lot to answer for. Hey ho. tail and dog and all that! Hey ho.

Why would they do that when the British Government was so prepared to run one down the Irish sea.
EU, " we can't see how it's going to work"
UK, " it will work , it's going to be world beating with new technology and it will work" (gove, Boris, frost etc.)
EU, "OK then, if you're sure"
Uk, "yay , fantastic deal, world beating hip hip hooray"
EU, ? Ok.
UK, " Nasty, spitefull EU , made us put a border down the sea!" "They tricked us" "We renege"!"
EU, "Sigh".

why not just put the border where the eu mainland ends, obviously anything then going to a tiny part of the eu will be via road through britain or boat to ireland, do all checks at EU mainland ports, simple
because why should RoI put a border between themselves and their biggest market, just to make things easier for the UK. it was the UK voted for brexit not RoI

That's true but it's the EU who are concerned about sub-standard goods entering their market, so it should be up to them to sort it however they like and on their soil.

that bullocks. are you really saying the UK doesn't care what enters the UK. go to any English port and you find them carrying out checks on good and people. they need to to stop smuggling, collect taxies stop unsafe goods, stop undesirables entering and most important comply with WTO rules

Yes but the protocol was setup for the benefit of the EU, no goods are checked going from NI to GB to the best of my knowledge.
