Despite the complicity of the DUP in this, it wouldn't actually have changed the outcome of the referendum if every DUP voter had voted remain. Where we are today was probably neither helped nor hindered when it boils down to be honest.

Having fudged themselves up on the Brexit referendum, and put NI’s place in the union in peril, they got one major opportunity to recover the situation. Teresa May, was open to keeping Britain in its entirety in the customs union. Labour were largely on side with the idea. Had the DUP been ruthlessly political in the selfish interests of NI, they could have dropped a text to Teresa. They lost the union not once with Brexit, but secondly with their failure to read the political realities and support TM’s customs union inclinations.
It’s utterly pointless blaming Dublin. Leo and Simon were utterly ruthless and clever, in their political approach. They pulled every lever possible to protect the interests of ROI and the issue of the border. That’s what they are elected to do. Likewise, no point blaming Boris. An inveterate liar and political con artist, was equally ruthless in pursuit of his political goal.
DUP were stupid and naive, I’m afraid. They utterly failed unionism in NI, and for that matter many others.

The most interesting part is to note the Irish and EU reactions. Up in arms and declaring mistrust, and for what? The UK gov taking what is really a rather small step to ease the problems created by the protocol, in the absence of any agreement from the EU to do so. It's clear the EU is happy for the protocol to be painful for citizens and businesses in Northern Ireland. So much for standing up for our rights. Shows Coveney up to be the pompous, jumped up career politician that he is. Showing similar traits to Johnson, you almost think he could have been educated at a prestigious English university too. Oh wait, that's right, he was.

and apparently also has a British passport according to a political friend.
Yes the Irish reaction is interesting to note. I see the EU rep counterpart to Frost thinks NI businesses should divert trade away from the rest of HM Realm.

Committee hearing:

"It is worth saying that the scale of documentary checks is huge by any standards,” he said.
“By way of illustration, our population is under half a percent of that across the European Union yet the documentary checks, according to the systems, completed so far would represent one fifth of the equivalent documentation right across the EU.”

He said that is because the protocol is affecting domestic food supply chains, whereas regulatory checks on EU imports are mainly bulk movements of international trade commodities.

Dr McMahon told committee members: “What is clear is that we’re handling a burden of work which is stretching us to the limit, which can only get less sustainable as we move beyond the grace period, again depending on what happens.”

The senior official said that of the shipments currently requiring documentary checks, 88% of them also undergo identity checks – requiring the back of the lorry to be opened up – and around 5% full physical inspections.

Ah bless us all, this grand soft morning. And sure wouldn’t I be after hoping you are all having a wonderful day!
@The Agrarian and @nivilla1982 have our hero Simon rumbled. They have heard it from the grape vine that he is a multi passport holding, English college educated plant, out to storm Belfast and claim the fourth green field for Mother Ireland. Bless my soul, but nothing could be further from the truth.
1. Simon is sound. He went to agriculture in England. Hardly the same as taking Greek letters in Oxford. Got expelled from college in Ireland for a year.
2. Neither Simon, Leo or Micheal, have any notions or desire to recapture the fourth green field. Who in their right mind in ROI, would want to take that field.
Firstly, it’s a wet and boggy field, requiring endless amounts of money, to keep it anyways respectable.
Secondly, the residents are wild. Focused on the past. Mindlessly bothered about emblems, flags, religion, marching men behind tricolour flags, marching men banging big drums, with orange regalia and black hats, etc, etc.
3. It has the Nolan Show, where the two tribes regularly bushwhack each other, in full technicolour on prime time TV. Reality TV was born and bred in NI, with a masterful conductor and two willing tribes to kick each other about, for general entertainment.
4. The BIG tribe has over time become a much smaller tribe. The small tribe has become a much BIGGER tribe. Now the two tribes more or less balance each other out, so everything is stalemate.
5. The Orange tribe, has been officially cut out of the will of the rich uncle in London, making them very anxious, and trying to blame Simon.
6. The Green tribe are cock a hoop, and enjoying the clear discomfort of the Orange tribe, since the uncle in London changed his will. THEY, think they can get away with a border poll, and win a majority to join the fourth green field to the other three green fields. Now the Orange tribe is gone beyond anxiousness. They are now in the realm of “paranoia”!
7. Meanwhile the Uncle in London, being a lying crafty bugger, has decided to create a few distractions to get the Orange tribe to calm down a bit. He has promised some daft undersea roundabout with tunnels, and roads, and trains, and shopping centres and cinemas and nail salons to connect London to Orangeland. As a further distraction he has promised to throw a bit of sand in the eyes of Simon and the EUcrats, by changing some details on the protocol. Of course he was careful to make these changes temporary in nature. He’s betting that the Orange tribe will stop sulking, and be happy again.
So @The Agrarian and @nivilla1982 who pray tell in the ROI, apart from the Shinners would want to take on that fourth green/orange field? Believe me ..... in that respect we are largely on your side. The threat to your cause is the dinosaurs within your own tribe. Leave poor Simon alone.

You do tell a good yarn! Poor simple Simon. Stop bullying him. He's an innocent we crater who can't defend himself.

Regardless of his intentions for the fourth green field, everything which comes out of his mouth antagonises more than half of the tenants who farm in the fourth field. Which would seem a silly thing to do, seeing as he must intend to buy the fourth field. For why else would he be so interested in his neighbours field? One thing we agree on is that his pockets aren't deep enough for this field, so he should keep his hands on his pockets and stop bidding. The tenants would only string him up when he'd come around to collect the rent.

Quite funny really. The DUP ignored the Brexit wishes of the people of Ulster and threw their lot in with the Tories who dumped all over them as soon as they got the chance.
Trust the current government at your peril.
Never mind, Reece Smugg made a few more million last week and Handcock’s former barman trousered his PPE Tory handout and is now doing very well🙄

The UK and EU had a legal agreement re changing any part of the NI protocol, you did so without even having the manners of informing the other party of the contract but just "changed" what you agreed on because you wanted to.

It is the simple truth from Coveney
Boris is taking you where you seem to want to go - out of the frying pan, into the fire!

Gosh we have a few central tenants in common. Now do not just yourselves a favour, but indeed the whole island. Get some real Unionist politicians on the ballot papers. P45 the dinosaur DUP clowns. Get some unity and strategic voting to max out the vote. Keep the Shinners boxed in as long as possible. I’ll drink a wee Bush to any plan that puts manners on ‘em! Millions more down here will say “amen”!
I’m not holding my breath though. Sammy and Ian and Gregory et al, have plenty expense receipts to process before they hang up their boots.

Overnight the UK Gvmnt have doubled down and extended further unilateral breaches of the Northern Ireland Protocol!
It's almost as if they are pushing for the EU NOT to ratify the Xmas Eve Trade and Cooperation Agreement. The big question is WHY are the UK doing this?

Nothing on UK media, is there a free press anymore?

See above article for clarification of the unworkable situation the protocol has created.

And this checking is done by UK citizens working for UK government agencies to EU standards to keep the EU happy their Single Market is not going to be affected by a rogue Pork Pie sent from Lincolnshire to Derry, or a truck of 24 pallets Markies Chipping Potatoes sent to Belfast. So falling over backwards to accommodate the EU but disrupting tremendously our own citizens daily lives. And you have the temerity to think and say this is the right thing. I just a wee wonder what Frenchie would be doing if this were imposed on him.
