The British government is in a really tricky place. Pull anymore unilateral stunts, by refusing to abide by its agreement with the EU, automatically means trouble from Biden in respect to any potential deal with USA, and draws attention from Australia etc, which is finalising its deal with UK. Long term the UK goal is the much vaunted deal with USA. Even after Biden is gone, the Irish political lobby in congress will scupper any deal with UK long into the future.
Bottom line from London perspective, is union with NI is not worth the price to pay, if it gets in the way of a deal with USA. That union with NI is now in the departure lounge, and comforting for London, is that NI‘s biggest pro union party the DUP, signed the warrant when they sold their soul to the ERG.
