The NI/ROI Protocol

Basically yes. Much the same as every British prime minister since thatcher.

However, equal blame lies with the DUP for not being smarter about it. They've just allowed this issue to hang around like a bad smell for the terrorists to use when it suits them. Far better to have taken that tool away from them by getting something passed long before now. Yes, an Irish and ulster-scots act will be a compete nonsense, of no practical use to anyone, a burden to the taxpayer and council rate payer, and only serve to harden divisions among people. What we obviously need is less flags and emblems, not more. But then again, when didn't common sense matter. Far better to have passed something in the assembly, clearly stating these reservations, while not wishing to be seen as denying minority rights - and let the public see for themselves the reality of it.

Agree, agree, agree. Tactically the DUP are as dumb as the come and get dumber by the hour.
Politics is about the “art of the possible”, and ideally you would have imagined that the time to pass the goddam legislation was directly after the assembly was reopened last time around. By now, and by next election it would have been history, and would deny SF of a rallying “cause”!

Now I see DUP MP’s have turned on Poots, and are trying to block him from appointing first minister…

A senior @duponline source on @edwinpootsmla nominating a First Minister: “he’s alienated all the people who know it needs to be done and he’s surrounded himself with people who don’t want to do it”

LATEST: Understand DUP MLAs & MPs voted AGAINST nominating for First minister. The vote was decisive more than 20 against. But @edwinpootsmla has nominated @paulgivan anyway. One very senior DUP source says there was “bedlam” in the party meeting.

I understand @duponline reps voted 24-4 AGAiNST nominating

From 2 different political correspondents

Poots and Givan left DUP meeting before vote
DUP leader Edwin Poots and Paul Givan "walked past" East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson while he was speaking during the DUP's meeting before the assembly sitting, BBC political correspondent Gareth Gordon reports.

The pair were making their way to the assembly chamber, where Mr Poots then confirmed the nomination of Paul Givan as first minister.

I don't think they can/could block him as such in the chamber, he simply has to state he nominates his choice for fm , as does the nominating officer from PSF their choice for dfm

Senior DUP source has told me the party officers are meeting this afternoon in a scheduled meeting .
Told me a vote of no confidence in Edwin Poots could , theoretically , be raised then .
Source said “ the party is uniting for the first time in a long time ….against Edwin”

Not a UUP motion, but I think that was a Robbie Butler amendment.
Original motion was a PSF creation, the UUP amendment about 6 month review was carried by majority in Assembly (Alliance, DUP, UUP, TUV) while opposed by PSF, SDLP, Green Party and PBP. The then amended motion was then carried by assembly with (PSF, SDLP, Green, PBP, Alliance, UUP and Claire Sugden) in support with TUV and DUP opposed. 5 members either did not vote or where not present.

wonder if they ask big Arlene back

Ben Lowry just on RTE Prime Time now. He believes Arlene lasted as long as she did, purely because nobody really wanted the job!
Now, as it has turned out, only Donaldson can realistically take the job.
His dilemma will be what to do if SF make demands again on the Irish language. Does he give in, or risk an election at a time when unionism is in such turmoil?
Does he have to take into account the real danger of SF being the biggest party in Stormont, when possibly they could in the lifetime of that stormont, become the governing party in the ROI?
It’s a tricky time…

You mentioned that before, you still think it's on the cards, so soon, what sort of odds and by when?

We certainly have our differences but I wouldn't wish them as a government on anyone... :(

In the last election, there was a huge swing to them, purely based in their populist policies. IF, they had run more candidates, in more constituencies, Mary Lou would be Taoiseach today☹️.
Are FF & FG and others now pre warned, and more prepared to take them on in the next election? I hope so, but …. 🙄🙄

Lowry also said, Sammy was the main man pushing the move against Poots….
