The NI/ROI Protocol

In the last election, there was a huge swing to them, purely based in their populist policies. IF, they had run more candidates, in more constituencies, Mary Lou would be Taoiseach today☹.
Are FF & FG and others now pre warned, and more prepared to take them on in the next election? I hope so, but …. 🙄🙄
True enough, but people knew that so, they knew she couldn't take power, a protest vote if you like.

President Clinton was right, it's the economy, and the ROI's economic recovery has been based - almost entirely - on entrepreneurship and investment (much of it foreign) which, looking at their policies and listening to their leaders, seem anathema to SF... and certainly a SF gov't would scare the sh!t out of most foreign investors.

The average guy in the ROI is no brighter or thicker than here, and we saw the what 'good' Mr Corbyn would do us trying to sell the same line as SF are over there, so we sent him packing. Having spent a fair bit of time in the Republic, and - post depression - have seen how leery people are of economic risk, I find it very hard to believe that if SF look like seriously gaining power, they'll get votes. From here it looks a lot like the FN / NR scenario in France. Horrible thought...

Heres the problem in ROI. Housing, housing, housing. We have a serious crisis, squeezing young people out of the market. Sky high rents, tight lending policies, high building costs, etc, etc. That alone is creating a swing against the “establishment“! SF know how to exploit that disaffection for electoral purposes.
You could say the “surprise” Brexit referendum result was a result of “disaffection“ with the establishment because of similar real or perceived issues, housing, jobs, etc, etc.
Of course solutions are allways simple from the opposition benches. SF need a term in government, to make the disaffected and gullible see that the cure is worse than the disease!!!
I hope and pray I don’t see that come to pass, but….

Hmm... not being provocative, but... in the past when things have got tough there, you've a big history of emigration, temporary or permanent. Is that no longer seen as an option, what's changed, do you have an 'entitled' generation there, as we seem to have here?

Presumably the younger, more liberal minded DUP voters, are saying to themselves ”WTF“?
Presumably a fair slice of those votes will go elsewhere. Probably split between UUP and Alliance.
Presumably DUP and UUP would need to work hand in hand at the next election to max out total unionist vote. But if ex UUP deserter Jeffry is DUP boss, then that would be a very bitter pill for UUP to swallow.
Presumably therefore, unionism as a proportion of the overall vote, which is already in decline, has put itself in a position where that decline is becoming steeper and arriving sooner than might otherwise be expected.

Basically the Unionists/Loyalists need to get their sh1t together and settle things down before next year's election, otherwise they are bending over a barrel and telling the Shinners to do their worst, with Boris helping lube things up.

As has been said, it's likely coming anyway but why speed that up by making a mess now and making it an even more extreme case of Lunatics running the asylum.

There was a old time DuP guy on the radio this morning who said "He would rather see the party that Dr Paisley formed, Destroyed than see the liberals take it over" and such attitude runs to the very top, look at Dodds, he lossed his seat because rather that reach out to the liberals, all he shouted "what about the union" assuming unionist would vote for him, so how does whoever the next leader is bring the 2 sides together, as simple shouting What about the union isn't working anymore

Have the DuP learned nothing, thanks to the way they remover Arlene, they give SF an open goal were they got the ILA over the line. and now they want Givan to resign giving SF another open goal ?.

also if Givan doesn't want to resign there F all the DuP can do about it, they can't force it, they can remove DuP support for him and kick him out of the DuP but they can't force him to resign, only SF (ironically) can do that. And if Givan thinks " well that my career inside the DuP over" he may well go sod it i'm making the most of this.

personal if i was in charge of the DuP I would let Givan stay for a few reason

there a election in 10 months anyway (7 if you take out all the holidays the MLA get) so he not going to be in power that long anyway

if jeffery does become leader, to become FM he need to resign his MP seat. while it may be a safe jeffery seat. it may not be a safe DuP seat given now many voters jeffery carried over from his days as a UUP MP and how unpopular the DuP is ATM.

while he could be co-op on if a MLA stands down (can't see him being co oped on, in Arlene seat but i'm sure they find a safe seat for someone to fall on their sword for him) i think that would be a very unpopular with the voters, it just about acceptable for a backbencher to be co-oped on. But he going to be FM he needs a (large)mandate to be able to speak with authority.

it would help unity the DuP by showing the Poots camp that he will to work together. he could use this time to rebuild the party some come the next election come out fighting

But Paisley (and his BFF Gusty) formed a party that was pretty mush a unionist terrorist organisation, so it hasn't really got any more place in democracy than SF, but these things seem to be ignored these days.

That old boy that you speak of might just get what he's asking for, and what he suggests may need to happen for unionists to hold onto top position in the assembly.

An election will concentrate the minds, and a strategy will need to be formed otherwise the unionist vote will be spread too thinly and will allow the shinners to clean up.
Necessity is the mother of invention.

I'm no fan of the DuP but to call them unionist terrorist organisation is wrong. there is NO dup mla who have served a prison sentence for killing people or blowing up the country. do they have dodgy connection Yes, have they don't some dodgy things yes, but what party doesn't have such connections or done such thing. look at John Hume, was talking to the IRA while they were killing. he now seen as some sort of hero who helped bring the peace.

the fact remains that all the MAIN party's north and south have a past which is nothing to be proud about. only SF has active members who openly killed people
