The NI/ROI Protocol

Hasn’t the EU put forward comprehensive proposals to resolve outstanding issues? But Frosty introduced a new blindsider at the last minute, to scupper practical proposals.
Now Lizzie the remainder, pro European, is sprung from the bench. However, she sees her boss is on the way out, so she has do don the leaver garb, and act tough on EU and threaten to pull article 16, as she has notions on moving into the garishly decorated flat. Bless her.

Quite the summary 🙈

What a bizarre but insightful post, you are literally 30+ years out of date on the republic. One might think you are being deliberately disingenuous.
i think you missed the point of my post. it was in reply to @Ashtree post about NI that is 40 years out of date (which i also find insightful that you didn't call him out).

The primary teacher thing is contingent on being able to teach Irish/Gaelge.

i'm sorry i had not heard that the Church had removed the requirement to have a religious cert to teach in a church run school, and since 99% of schools are still church run in some way ?
The public sector has a completely transparent hiring process that can be appealed.

is that the transparent hiring process that has declan o'rourke filling his mother roll as pippa hackett special advisor ?

any way it not about having a "open and transparent process", that only there to give cover to the bosses. it about have a neutral work space so all that work there can feel safe
Hardly any people under 60 are religious in any way, it's mostly older people and immigrants that practice any form of religion and more power to them.

that largely the same here and as a agnostic the soon we have a complete separation of church and state the better

Have you ever asked a prodestant family in the republic how they like life here? Try down around Bandon in Cork.

ill ask the same off you, have you ever asked a non RC family how they feel and how they like life in the RoI. I remember after the GFA came in and we had "peace" RTE did a program on prodestants in the border countries. many of them talked about only being tolerated and that often they had to sneak over the border to buy stuff or take part in their "culture" .

I know RoI has went threw major changes in the last 40 years (and i believe more are to come). I don't think i would get a tap on the shoulder in Dublin now telling me that " you shouldn't be wearing that shirt (Ireland rugby) your not Irish" and that i should "pee off back to england" that i got in the mid 80'S. and in those 40 years Dublin has become a place i had to go to if i wanted to see some shows, to a city i love to go to, it great to to sit out on the street drinking a coffee watching people from all over the world walk by

But NI has also move on. the vast majority of people don't care about the whole secretion thing. it a very small part that want to keep it alive (on both sides) as without the hate, they have nothing and would have to accept that it isn't the other side keeping them down, it the fact they assholes

At top levels of both sides of the paramilitaries it's about making money from drugs, protection rackets and other illegal activities, nothing to do with loyalism or republicanism, they use sectarianism to keep the people afraid of the other side.
It's always been about control and money, iys just a shame that so many have been drawn and fooled into the games that Ian, Martin and Co. played for decades.

It’s hard to understand what possessed him, to come back to lead the DUP. It was fairly obvious the Protocol had gone too far down the road, to be materially changed, and it was more obvious that the Boris government or indeed any government, weren’t going to step backwards more than an inch, all to placate a tiny portion of the population of GB. It’s really hard to figure out, what Jeffery thought he could actually achieve.

I wonder was it about 'taigs' though? Would they object in the same way to an SDLP FM?
Probably not to be fair. But, they know that’s not on the cards.
Thing is, the UUP wont bring down the executive if Shelly has the numbers for FM. It will be a DUP thing. UUP wouldn‘t be happy, but they would abide by political norms.

is it funny how much fake anger is shown by the politician of the south, that the DuP would dare bring down stormount rather than have SF as first minster. yet how long did it take to form a government in RoI at the last election, near 6 months and was only formed when FG and FF put aside their bitter rivalry and form a unholy alliance rather that work with SF. the simple truth is neither FF or FG want SF to be FM as it would make it impossible for them to not go into government with them in the south at the next election

What are you talking about? SF didn’t have the numbers to create a government and they had no legal or constitutional means, to have Mary Lou elected Taoiseach. Simple as that. Whether or not the other parties want to create a coalition with them is of no consequence. They are perfectly entitled so stay out.
The situation is different in law in NI. SF have to accept a unionist FM, so long as unionists have the vote upper hand. That is how it works.
If the balance of power changes, then it’s for tge DUP to accept.

BTW, I hope DUP lose the FM in the next administration. They deserve whatever electoral wipe which might befall them. I also hope SF don’t win it. If Beattie or some somebody else gets it, than do be it. But unlikeky….

And I hope SF dont govern in ROI, at least for another 20 years….. if FF and FG keep them at bay, then great. But if they get the votes, to elect a Taoiseach, then we have to accept. That’s how it goes…

That's my gut feeling too. It's the active terrorist links and continued support for past crimes etc.

For me though, the odd thing about that stance is how inconsistent it is. We all know the the FM post has no particular meaning. So why then are they currently in government with them?

But it's also worth noting that they wouldn't be the first party to pull down stormont. And furthermore, Sinn Fein has a very lengthy history of standing for seats and then not participating in the process of democratic government, which is still ongoing. So they'd have no right to shout about non-participation in the executive.

SF is now the second largest party in RoI and come the next election are favourite to become the largest so your 20 years is out the window. The only reason why they not in power is that 2 parties (FF.FG)that has spend the last 100 years cutting the sh1t out of each other (and some of it was very very bitter) couldn't bring themselves to working with SF (which if either one had done so would have give them enough seats to for a government). If SF holds the FM chair in NI, and become the largest party in RoI there not a hope in hell that you keep them out of government without pissing off a lot of people

and talk about the rooster coming home to roost
when the GFA was first setup it was the largest Block of MLA's got to pick the FM and the second largest block the DFM (so it was the DuP,UUP,Alliance) V's SF,SDLP V's others). it was when the DuP/SF renegotiated the GFA to the Belfast agreement that it became the largest and second largest parties that got to pick FM/DFM.
That Shure has come back to bite them in the ass

I see on Belfast Telegraph, that fellow unionist politicians in NI, are mightily unimpressed by Jeffrey’s latest three card trick.
A new word has entered the political vocabulary in NI called “Jeffreymandering” 🤣🤣.

Bottom line though, is that this political stunt by Jeffrey, is a serious blow to any chance of a pan unionist approach to holding back the Shinner tide.

There really doesn’t seem to be even a molecule of unionist strategic thinking, or long term planning.
