The NI/ROI Protocol

While the calibar of people like Lis Truss are out there as a negotiator the bungling will continue. Her incompetence is stunning. Look at the Prof take on her recent endeavours in relation to NIP

Prof Boyle, emeritus professor of public international law at the University of Edinburgh, said he was “aghast” at her comments.

He told the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee on Wednesday: “She was defending this on the basis of the international law principle of necessity.

“Well, I hope somebody has a word with her and tells her not to say that, because necessity as an international law is a defence to a breach of international law. So it’s only relevant if you’re already breaking international law.

“So the Foreign Secretary is virtually saying, ‘oh, yes, we’re breaking international law but it’s alright,

Why dont you report all of what he said, / report what he said correctly.

Like his comments In the first paragraph of this article where he said the bill "does not violate international law". Also:-

“I read the bill as laying the groundwork for a notice of derogation. Article 16 allows them to do so where they consider it necessary,”

“If the collapse of power sharing in Northern Ireland isn't a societal difficulty, I don’t know what is."

Oh the irony
The economics speak for themselves. Simple really. Protocol is the reason NI is performing better than rest of GB, as they have unfettered access to single market.
For example, NI dairy industry would implode without access to the single market, and the ROI processors. That’s according to NI dairy processors themselves.

It's your political bias I was pointing out the irony to.

Not at all simple.

Maybe you should read Dr Gudgins article rather than just the ones that suit.

'The church?'

Protocol aside, Trevor Gribben has developed a habit of going on solo runs, purporting to be church policy or the unified opinion of the 200,000+ membership. 🙄 We need a new clerk who is happy with the job of clerk, and not pope.
Is that not a failing a lot of the various churches have, ie various representatives are wheeled out to endorse/etc the latest NIO idea or scheme?

Ah, be off with you. I think the “church”, whichever one you fancy, is struggling to keep its own house in order, never mind sorting out the protocol.

I think it's not at all clear that he's endorsing an NIO scheme. Neither is it clear on who's authority he speaks. He's the clerk after all. A lawyer who doesn't know his place. I expect he wheeled himself out as usual. Does he know that he clerk's for an all-island organisation which contains voters for (almost) every political party? I'm wondering where the moderator was and why he wasn't doing the speaking, and whether the buzz of assembly week was unduly bolstering the clerk's sense of importance.

Are we hearing much from the other churches? Honest question. I haven't noticed any comment.

And then in a couple of Tory cabinet resignations, the last hope for Jeffery and the DUP, to save a modicum of face, went down the Swanee…..
