The Queens, reps and the patter.

Today I hung up on one rep from a company after warning him before that I don’t tolerate phrases such as “touch base” and “going forward” etc. This follows on from telling another to leave the yard for dumbing down the queens English and using poor Americanism’s and American phrases.

Each to their own I suppose but that said, I want to be spoken to in plain basic English and given no fancy patter and spiel to make them sound very dynamic and efficient. Luckily they’re are a few old school reps etc I can deal with that are doing it properly. The new wave of up and coming sales people and people calling in or on the phone leave a lot to be desired.

Am I in a minority for detesting this sort of language and taking such actions?

More often than not I am operating noisy machinery or working with noisy animals when people ring, so I can't hear them anyway.

What happened to ringing in the evening on the landline and actually organising or planning the next day's work as used to happen in the old days here?

I have in the past, told a rep if they used the phrase "touch base" as in "I thought I'd just call to touch base with you" again I'd terminate the call, and any further dealings.
Good for you, can't abide that management speak.
My land agent is another one who comes out with some of that crap too.

I don’t mind the odd americanism creeping in etc, but try not to use them myself ( going forward), you will never stop language evolving, as it has done always.
What I can’t stand is the constant use of the word ‘like’, and the estuary cross Australian drawl which consists of every sentence ending with an upper inflection, as if asking a question.
We all have our pet hates.

I say old chap, maybe a little snifter would help before mater and pater come round ,and the little lady brings out one's warm slippers. How ever actually a man after my own heart, cannot bear the will full destruction of the English language, second only to the sloppy way everybody dresses, one size fits all joggers, and see through leggings on sights which should not be seen, I blame the influx of well travelled young shepherds who think it's ok to walk about in a big coat and shorts .

I for one was never a fan of English at school and often just gazed out the window as the hour passed. Only in more recent years have I taken it more seriously, actively trying to improve my written English. My written English was never poor but room for improvement was always there. I guess my pet hate of lazy conversing has grown with age but stems from my grandparents who couldn’t abide it either. I was always taught that if they can’t put the effort into talking to you properly with respect and manners. What’s that say about them and what they have to offer.
