The Russian Sanctions

Look pointless and rather weak. 5 small banks and 3 individuals that are already sanctioned by the US 4 years ago!
Were these the only targets that were not given money to Conservative party or something?

Amazing how quickly this shower can act to stop Universal Benefit but put out such a rubbish response to a sovereign democratic nation being attacked after all the build up.

I suppose we have to wait and see but it does seem a weak response. Putin annexed the Crimea in 2014 and hasn’t suffered any consequences so I can’t really see what is different about these 2 regions. Sooner or later complete economic disengagement will be required, we can’t trade with Putin and his mates if he’s threatening NATO members can we? Plenty of ethnic Russians in other former USSR states. This applies to the Baltic states who are NATO members.

Good idea for a thread, pity about the daft comments.

It's very obvious that 'the West' is coordinating its response; the big hit on day one coming from Germany and its halting of the pipeline (probably a bit of 'conscience money' in there too, after the fiasco of the 5000 helmets).

More will follow; I don't know, but I guess that every few days or so - maybe less - something else significant will be announced. Plus, every day, more materiel is arriving in Ukraine, free of charge, instructors included where necessary. A Russian helicopter is worth about £20m, a typical fighter about £40m, a tank about £2m - we have sent and can keep on sending anti-tank missiles, NLAWs, which cost a bit over £20k a time. The US is and can do the same with Javelin at about £60k a throw, and with Stinger at a bit more.

Of course not all missiles will hit, but there are already three times as many ATMs in Ukraine as the Russians can deploy tanks, and four times as many SAMs as they can deploy aircraft - and the numbers of them, and the numbers of people trained on them are increasing daily. But even if only 10% hit, that's about a third of his forces gone just with what's there now. All this and much more will just keep pouring in.

It won't / can't stop a Russian invasion in its first rush; but it can slow it and eventually stop it in a way that wouldn't have been possible even just a few months ago. And it will certainly mean that any hopes Vlad has of actually holding territory away from the Russian border, could only now be realised at a truly horrific cost in monetary and human terms to Russia. He can't afford either and hope to survive.

(Just as a bit of added interest, taking Ukraine with the ~200k he has around it is feasible, but conventional wisdom tells us that he'd need at least three times as many for even a hope of a successful occupation, and double that to be sure of it - Russia currently has an army of 600k, about a third of which are conscripts)

For those mocking the sanctions approach, give us the figures on what Russia has had frozen today, then tell us it's irrelevant.

In 2018 the foreign affairs select committee said the government risked national security by turning a blind eye to dirty Russian money flowing through the city of London. Would I be daft to suggest that Rees Mogg and Johnson have some catching up to do even after today’s “coordinated response”?

Have sanctions ever worked ? If we stopped buying a single thing from russia those at the top wont suffer any deprivation just the normal citizen and that would allow putin to blame the nasty west, stopping putin from leaving russia without the risk of imprisonment might concentrate his mind, the germans should have stopped his yacht leaving

now to be fair BoJo has also threatened to limited all Russian based donations to the tory party to £2 million a week to show that they can't be bought . and has said there will be no peerships for any more oligarchs for at leased 6 weeks.

Liz Truss has flown out to Uruguay to oversee the safe return of all UK citizens

Are you suggesting that no UK citizens should be allowed to donate to UK political parties?

Or is it just UK citizens of foreign birth? If so, how about brown UK citizens? (easier to spot (y))

Of course if the Russians did decide to invaded they would not soften up the target zone with artillery and would not fire back...
Would just drive along like ducks in a shooting range...

Blimey, you're more slippery than an eel.
For balance, am aware Labour Party is not averse to Russian funding either.
Will not comment on skin colour remark..
