I used to know a Ukrainian refugee who fought in WW2 he hated the Russians with every ounce of his body. Just mention the word brought forth a string on invective, much which I had never heard before
Ukrainian history and where it leaves the country today is impossible to understand. Presumably due to being on many fault lines between various eastern European empires and Russia over the last thousand years. IMO eastern Ukraine has always looked to Russia for support and influence whereas the western half of the country has always looked west.

So, I wouldn't be surprised to see pro Russian Ukrainian militia groups mobilised in the east of the country, the Ukrainian army moving to put them down. Quickly followed by the Russian's crossing the border in the the context of being a 'peace keeping' force and subsequently occupying eastern Ukraine, which the majority of the eastern population would not object to. :scratchhead:

you have to remember that much of Western Ukraine was actually Poland until the Second World War. The Russian claim on the East and the sympathy of the local populace is for there reason that like so much of Eastern Europe Moscow planted native Russians in property which had been confiscated from the former owners. who had often been sent to the Gulags for slave labour.
Those families who survived tried to reclaim much of this property after the fall of the CCCP. These Russians tended to keep themselves to themselves and today form many enclaves which are disliked and often discriminated against by the local populations as they are still seen as intruders and the result of colonisation just as many Europeans have been treated in former African and Eastern states.
Moscow has no legal claim on the Ukraine any more than we have on Kenya Singapore or even India. I am certain you would though find plenty of locals in most of our former colonies who would gladly welcome us back, but we have no moral right at all.

Uncle Joe deliberately starved to death 2 million Ukrainians back in the early to mid thirties. when the German army invaded Ukraine they were greeted as liberators by some of the locals indeed some served in German army units fighting the red army. Inevitably the Ukrainian people were treated as badly by Hitler as by Stalin so a sad old part of the world and doesn't seem to be getting much better for them,

We treated them pretty badly as well. Around 50k Cossacks/Ukrainians surrendered to the British, but only on the understanding they would not be sent back to Russia. We broke that promise and forcibly repatriated them (The Great Betrayal), they were subsequently murdered en masse by the NKVD as soon as the trains crossed into the Soviet area.

There is much talk about how the West needs a bogeyman but I think the same is true of Putin, distractions abroad help occupy the minds of his citizens at home.

As others have said, Russia is a vast country with immense natural resources. Only it is controlled by an Elite cabal of gangsters who are loyal to the government. At least the Chinese try to do their best for the average citizen, at least some of the time.

Uighur Muslims...

Im afraid China are far worse than Russia im my book, that has always seemed like Nazi Germany to me or one step away from it, (who knows if they are killing them too?) i was always astonished it took so long to become main stream news and just seems widely accepted by the world? i mean WTF 'compulsory re-education centres'? and the rest of their human rights atrocities...

Accepted because no one want to go with out cheap Chinese crap, i certainly would, they should sanction the sh!t of them but everyone's to spineless...
