Yesterday I drove from Cirencestert to Cambridge ( to British Antarctic Survey) headquarters openday, and back.I was staggered by the amount of agricultural land disappearing under houses, industrial parks ,HS2 etc etc.
I was especially taken aback by the amount Bicester is growing, and then by St Neots there is a huge housing development going on at Winteingham, one didn’t seem to drive many miles with just farmland either side the road.
Fortunately I came back via Deddington Chipping Norton, Burford which allowed me catch glimpses of the open Country of the Cotswolds.
Are other members who travel a lot noticing the same all over England?
The likes of Chris Packham,Monbiot etc etc, seem to turn a blind eye to destruction of the environment by development, and just keep agriculture bashing :banghead:

So because you have a house, theres no need to build houses for anyone else?

It's farmers who sell their ground to developers :scratchhead:

Planting the foundations for a bungalow in the corner of a field over here in NI was the most profitable crop you could plant, there's many a family farm that wouldn't still be here without it.

On the bigger scale, I know at least 6 farmers who got over 200 million between them and they are all still farming away.

I quite agree, and it annoys me when people who live in newish houses built on green field sites oppose development plans for yet more new houses that their children may wish to buy. Certainly development will carry on as we are such a densely populated island .
It is just hard coming to terms with it happening.
Being a hypocrite if I had any development land I would have no qualms about selling it ,especially if adjoining a present housing estate, as to farm next door to housing estates must sometimes be hell. Sell up and move to a nice farm away from houses, that fact that I sold land for houses to buy it would be just my good fortune.
As an industrialist told me, “unfortunately it’s not a fair world”.
It’s the last bit of my thread that irritates me , Packham,Monbiot and other environmentalists giving agriculture so much flack for destroying the countryside but rarely yet not giving developers a REALLY hard time who are REALLY destroying the rural/ countryside environment.
I make no apologies for repetition.

I have no great problem with land being sold for housing but I think the ability to roll over should stop. The tax raised should then be spent on the amenities the new housing will require. Schools, hospitals, doctors, dentists sewage infrastructure, power upgrade etc etc. Otherwise we all receive a diluted service at the expense of the few. It is a problem in the South West.
So sell your land for development but pay your Tax.

One of my Landlords has sold land for 397 houses. He’s had to cough up for two extra school classrooms, an upgrade to traffic lights in town centre , over 50k on archeological surveys , upgrades to sewers and broadband . There is also a childrens park on the development he is paying for.

What boils my pi#s are the brown sites on the edge of cities and towns that are not being built on, old buildings falling down. They would rather take grade 1 and 2 soils in green belt.
It does make you wonder what the state of play will be in say 50 years time, i wonder if the lazy people will still be paid for having kids for cash and breeding the next feral lot.
