Just seen it on the lunchtime news.I just dont get the meat and dairy bit.

Grow grass for livestock.Said grass is the best way to sequest carbon whilst creating a fantastic habitat for increased numbers of animals, mammals insects and wildlife. The grass also benefits healthy soil through increased humus and fibre.
OR
Cultivate soil for more plant and vegetable production increasing the carbon entering the atmosphere.Spray herbicides, pesticides ,insecticides and fungicides creating more carbon and gas omissions.Destroy wildlife ,insects, mammals that live on the land.Harvest crops and fly around the World, some to factories to create fake meats.Destroy soil through lack of organic matter through less livestock manures.

Ps ,I know some vegetables are eaten with meat but it is far less and results in minimal damage to the planet.

They should be encouraging grass fed livestock and why encourage tree planting, every research ive read suggests grass is best for carbon absorption and not deciduous trees ?

I just don't get it.

The trouble is, "they" see reducing ruminant livestock as a simpler route to nett zero than reducing air and road travel from their urban perspective.
Allied to that are continual moves to "export" a lot of the problem by importing most food an industrial products. I wonder how that features in their calculations?
There appears to be a complete inability to think longer term rather than focussing on what they see as the easy "wins".
However I rather suspect that what they see, with their metropolitan goggles on, as easy will be nearer impossible in practice (I hope).
Exactly, it’s like the easiest way to stop violent crime isn’t to lock up murderers and nutters, it’s to point a camera at a car doing 35 in a 30 zone

I wonder how many people get fed from an acre of cereals if it goes straight to the end user rather than feeding livestock and the end user eating the meat?
As the population expands can we keep meat eating?
I assume the information is available.

I agree that this is a serious threat to ruminant livestock. The government seem intent on following reports that are sponsored by oil companies/airlines and corporations wanting to make a fortune out of fake meat.
There is no.viable replacement for flying and they know people won't stop so get rid of the cows and plant trees.
They need to be seen to be doing something however misguided.
The livestock.industry representative bodies need to get together and do some serious lobbying and promote the benefits of pasture and livestock.
It.must now be time to throw all the levy money at combating this threat. Is is a waste of money running weninars on how we can be ultra efficient and cut costs if we are left without a market.

You may be correct but what else can we do?
Once this government sets a course it will be difficult to change irrespective of the facts.
The only crumb of comfort I took from the BBC news at 1 today was that they referred a couple of times to "some people PERHAPS having to cut down on meat and dairy. They were not as hard in us as they may have been.

They didn’t ignore the smoking
Hardly anyone smokes these days compared to years ago

The combination of relentless negative propaganda with ever increasing legislation and costs imposed on cigarettes has destroyed the product in many countries. Yes, the same tactics are being used to reduce and eventually destroy the ruminant food industry, make no mistake about it. It is proven to be a very effective method of changing people's habits.

It works with cigarettes/tobacco and it will work just as well against meat and milk.

But tobacco products cause addiction that leads to illness. Meat and dairy don't. Meat and dairy are part of healthy, ethical diets.

Maybe farmers should switch to rearing dogs for meat. The Koreans lick their lips on dog meat.

I think you would find the BBC and general wokey types, would quickly find plausible excuses to encourage ruminant production once more.

Just trying to help...

I'm not saying that it is correct. I'm just commenting on the tactics already being used and its effect on consumption. It would work to reduce demand and change consumer habits about anything. Another example is the car Diesel engine which has been demonised for no good reason in recent years and its demand and sales has virtually collapsed.

It is far easier to demonise and attack products than it is to defend them. So maybe we should stop defending and go on the attack as an industry and as custodians of the greater environment rather than constantly being on the defensive? Now there's a thought.

I agree about tobacco products, but you miss the point. Which is that once some serious effort was put in to demonise it, sales declined rapidly.

Yes, it will not effect me much if most of the area is turned into a serious fire hazard after I'm gone. The timing is OK and won't effect me much. It does effect the countryside as a whole though and it will likely be transformed over the next decade, and certainly by 2040 it will be unrecognisable, for the worse.
