Has anyone watched these programmes on BBC 2. Certainly thought provoking, is the modern economic model creating a wider divide between the rich and poor?
I think the trickle down of wealth certainly is'nt getting to the poorest aided by mass immigration and zero hours contracts. The poor in this country now are not the unemployed but those in low paid work
The programme stated that Uk Quantative Easing cost £375bn this is equivalent to £24k to every house in in the country I have not seen any of it, has any one else?
With regard to foreign investors buying property in London is it Inward Investment or are we flogging the family silver off
If you missed it i would recommend you catch it on I Player

People need to get out more and see the world.

I have a roof over my head, a fridge full of grub, and I turn a tap on an fresh water comes out. My daughter is not wasting away from protein-energy malnutrition before my eyes and hunger is something I generally experience about an hour or two before a meal.

As above, try telling half the world you are poor. I do not believe there is an underlying class or wealth issue in the UK, there possibly is an underlying social issue in the country.

I fully agree that compared to many poor people in the world none of us are poor.
However the gap between the rich and the rest of British society is undoubtedly widening, and we are are in the sector that is falling way
behind the super wealthy.

We are still so unbelievably fortunate in being able to eat and drink what we wish, and to have shelter, and to be largely free of being in fear of our lives as are some poor souls in foreign countries.

But to pretend that there is no widening of the gap between ourselves and the mega rich of this country is also to be in denial.

I'm not worried about the very wealthy. None of us here would want their lives I assure you. The vast majority of those I have met had serious marital/family issues or were gripped by various vices like alcoholism or worse. When you get into that kind of board game in life, self restraint becomes supremely important.

All I want is a life where I am not concerned about how I might pay the next months bills. That is plenty good enough for me. I am not really into consumerism and definitely don't care a jot about keeping up with the Joneses.

There are a portion of UK citizens who are certainly very poor due to their circumstances. It is for these people that it is vital we have a social security system. None of us here wish to see families living and perishing in then streets. However there are a portion of people (this includes me!) who are perfectly fit and able to work and who are as yet unemployed for whatever reason. There certainly needs to be more effort at a local government level to help find them work.

Does it matter? So long as they are taxed adequately I have no concern whatsoever.

I haven't seen the programme. I think the real problem is not about what poor is but the expectations of people earning less. I know if I went to a sink estate in Gateshead I would see some seriously hard up people but I'll bet most have an iPhone, Sky tv, cigarettes to hand and a roof over their heads. Unfortunately when the harder up people see the local entrepreneur drive past in a Bentley they feel entitled to the same. If he ever become PM John McDonnell will put that right.

Well I'm sure IF that happens, McDonnell will give it a good go, but the fact remains that making the rich poorer NEVER makes the poor meaningfully richer. Does it?
