A third of the money will probably go to agents and hangers on to administer ever more complicated schemes.
They quietly announced this week that they have cut the top tier landscape recovery scheme from 1/3rd (800million!) of the Agriculture budget down to 50million. Rest of the money (750million) to top up the two lower tier budgets. Thats a small win for us this week.

Are they going to use some or this money to top up the payments on the first parts of sfi to be launched next month? Might have a better chance of getting some to sign up then?

That is a massive win for those of us who have been fighting for this since SFI was announced in june 2021... not there yet though until the pay the correct amount to make these schemes commercially viable as an option... Devil in the details again😍

Can you suggest some diversification for a tennant farmer in deprived area plz
No but i could quickly name at least 3 examples of now very successful businessman who were basically small farmers in less favoured areas . 2 of which sheep shearing was there way of creating a basis for very successful supply and development businesses because of their knowledge of a particular subject and getting out , (World wide actually ) and gaining broader vision via that means and taking that home with them..

So despite saying there are many forms of diversification you can not give any...

Generally .....see above Delilah post, as has happened for sometime now.

@delilah there are many forms of diversification that can help keep a farm going and that's been a thing since time immemorial .

Really gets on my tits people who just throw in the "diversify" word. Ffs every farmer in england should "diversify"...... What other industry/trade is that poorly paid they've got to "diversify"..... Sorry Mr brick layer we're only going to pay u a fiver an hour but don't moan about it because you can "diversify" into something else after your 10hr day.......

I found as much inspiration in your comment as a chav sucking on a fag but....

Lots of businesses have to diversify to survive in the long-term though don't they? Isn't it just another word for change or adapt? We can influence market forces a little bit but mostly they dictate to us. Those market forces are ultimately going to win over any supplier who refuses to change just because that's the way he's always done things.

And for the record I wish I could live off 350 fat lambs a year like my grandparents did. But I can't and I accept that.

I think where it gets some folks is when someone with a decent side income ends up using the money to fund an unprofitable farming enterprise
Does no one any good especially themselves the answer is always the same in the end it all ends up zilch

It's what i've done over the years to make a living on a small farm.
Off farm part time work , not fun and not particularly what i've wanted to do but its helped financially as well as helps take your mind off the same old same old at home, people out when employing you don't want to here all the same farmer type whinging all the time.
I know plenty of fencers and sheep shearers and other manual workers extremely hard working people who work their farms around self employed work, and some who have even not had a farm to start with but ended up buying in to one.

Better get used to it because subsidies aren't going to be what the have been .

What happens to a busy farmer that works hard and employs people with your ideology?

Wow hang on a minute ,its not some idealogy its just what i have done to make a living from a small farm as ive said above.

I forgot to add Working out gives you different view points and ideas as well.

Its not advice for anyone
and its up to you what you do and think.
It doesn’t matter to me either way i was just interested in how you are thinking.
To put it another way if you think that farming requires some other career or income from elsewhere is it really worth doing in your position?
I wouldn’t like to think I was handed a wage then had to use that wage to enable me to farm.
I’m not having a dig at you either I’m just interested in your views.

Its nothing to do with 'my views'
Its a Reality for a lot of people , a fact, there are many partime farmers or farmers have diversified or have other off farm income streams that's been the same for as long as there have been farms , like the farmers wife selling eggs or potatoes etc at the roadside .

Its the fact of life for a lot of people , whether you think its a good idea or not .

Grandfather was a miner and grandmother and the kids did the farming. They rented a farm in around the war time. They weren’t thinking of trying to make any money out of farming they were frightened of starving to death or worried about food security. They had everything they needed to survive from start to finish even sold a lot of different things to the local grocers and butchers, so I do understand a bit about what you are saying.
There’s no way grandfather would have put any of his wage into the farming side without getting it back fairly swiftly
