What food source is going to be used that's cheaper than the sun, rain & grass ?

I wouldn't be surprised to see sewerage being used somewhere along the line.
But sewerage is not just poo, it's all those nasty chemicals which get flushed down with the wipes which break down to micro plastics.

We still are behind the curve with the impact on the environment from micro plastics.

I would wager that within 10 (?) years you will be able to eat a plant based steak and not know the difference from the real thing
It may not be mainstream yet but the overriding sales factor will be price & it's only a matter of time ---

There is room in the world for all food types/diets/etc---constant running down of what we wrongly see as competitors is just stupid & gets no-one nowhere fast (that goes for folk on both sides of the ''argument'')

Lab-grown lion and tiger meat is now on the menu.

I wouldn't fancy my chances with it. You never know what process it all has to go through before it reaches your plate.

Expensive to produce now ---but give it some time to develop & it may be different
Same with taste & texture ---it will take time to perfect

I agree ---it's not for me but that doesn't mean others wont like it

I'd try it in a taste test ---i might be surprised, just as i was when i tried 14 different steaks and found that the best by far was from a Holstein!
Why’s it gonna get cheaper? How are they gonna make the raw materials cheaper when they’re going up in price? And what’s happening to power prices to make this stuff?

That article’s over a year old. Old news. How are they getting on solving the problems?

I have no idea but people are always finding new ways to do things . Just because you & I can't see how it can happen doesn't mean it won't happen

I’ll answer that. It’s because Big Money (and you're not a fan of that) is pushing everyone into believing that removing meat and (in due course) plants from the food supply chain will be better for everyone and the planet too. Their food supply chain, the food chain of their dreams. You know fine well that they won’t stop at meat.

Big Money wants to be Bigger Money, it knows nothing else.

For sure, it has always been about fake food rather than fake meat.

I'm an arable farmer, I have no 'skin in the game'.

As above. Yes you do.

Because these fake meat companies and their promoters are all part of the cartel.

Quite. Which is the point I was making. Fake food is a symptom, not a cause. Everyone likes to get uppity about fake meat as if it in itself is a threat to their business. It isn't, it is the corporations behind fake meat that are the threat. Yet the industry doesn't have any interest in challenging those corporations, on the contrary it remains happy for its representative bodies to remain so far up their arse they will need a torch to find a way out.

Obv the first one is prob beyond my understanding so I’ll try to read it later but the second one is clearly 3 years old, even though there’s no date on it for some reason.

Quoting a 2012 study isn’t exactly what I’d call using scientifically up to the minute analysis. Then we have variously words/phrases like:
by summer 2020
aiming
confident that
move towards
etc, etc, etc.

And the general liberal use of misinformation and "accepted information" that is now known not to be valid.

More recent reports around this industry aren’t quite so full of optimism as reality starts to sink in. If they can’t make decent money at it then it won’t take over the world in the way planned.

Just out of interest, why did you say the second one might be easier to read? Because the webpage is horrendous? Nothing difficult about the text. 2019 again though.

Beyond Meat will be taken over. Oatly essentially already has been even though it retains a listing. They won’t necessarily disappear, but the money train is grinding to a halt. Maybe not listening to the rhetoric in the media, but share charts tell you what you need to know many months in advance. Impossible Foods are struggling too but they aren’t listed.

The company we sell potatoes to have come to us asking us to grow various crops such as Cowpeas to be ground up for ‘Green Protein’ to make these fake meat products. There’s also a big article in the Vegetable Farmer magazine about Naylors a large cabbage grower in Lincolnshire looking to do similar with cabbages. However as this all takes further processing the most climate friendly thing is for people just to eat their vegetables ‘au naturel’

Indeed. The concept of potato protein blows my mind. If you want protein why start with potatoes? Apart from the fact they’re dirt cheap obvs?

It’s not top 3, no - not as specific as that. But look beyond the fake meat at the motivation for its growth. A strong (misguided) tide of public opinion away from ruminant meat production is not just a threat to my business but to society at large and our ability to feed ourselves.
And the fake meat industry is a part of the ultra processed food industry, which is a threat not only to the health of the population, but also the health of our soils, on which we all depend, so I for one am very happy it's not going well for them.

Yeah, you’re probably right. Sadly so. A vain hope on my part.

I’ll keep chipping away at it locally and do what I can.
one of the lads at Aikido, with a degree in micro biology was saying the other day, that eating meat was bad for climate change, cue soap box and a big explanation from me as to why ruminant agriculture was important and why we need more cattle and regen ag. I don't know if he agreed, or just nodded to shut up the farmer!
