No NATO should have stated that if it was asked it would help to repel any invading army, nothing else other than Ukraine agreeing to stay out of NATO would have avoided this catastrophe.
Russia does not recognise anything other than force, it's a case of put up or shut up as far as the West is concerned!

And have you not seen the comments from poland and Hungary to name two that called for stronger action two days ago, it was linked by someone on this forum. Do you really think Germany will allow the gas to be switched off ? Let's see how united the 27 are if it kicks off, they fidnt do very well when covid struck, everyman for them selves over ppe etc. At least your electric supplies arent gas dependent.

What gets me is that the senior officers in the Russian military are going along with this.
They must know that it makes no sense from an economic, political or military sense.
One can only assume that there is a large supply of novichok underpants to be distributed.
As the Russians have a nuclear arsenal, one can only hope that there is a credible military leadership that may be able to control these weapons and topple Putin.
3 Generations since we have sent our young people to a European war, let us hope that this continues.
It should serve us here in the UK and the wider west that where we have leaders that lie to their population and pull up the means to remove them we are equally at risk.

I'd guess their wives and family's would be on a fast trip to Siberia, or the nearest wall if they didn't.
