What has the EU got to do with it?
Italy has been a financial basket case throughout my adult life but it used to muddle through by devaluing the Lira. Then it joined the Eurozone and the rest is history. The Italians did not meet the Eurozone qualification by a country mile but the corrupt Eurocrats were so hell bent on signing up members for their club that they brushed the rules aside. Now they are at loggerheads and another nail has been driven into the EU coffin. I am sorry that you could not figure this out.

Yeah.
It's a shame for Germany.
They've not been putting enough towels on sun loungers.
Nobody has any spare cash to buy stuff with.

That’s a simple question, requiring a one word answer. “Nothing”.

However some nutter will be along shortly with a volume of twaddle, to prove their “research”, in the matter of all things Italian!!
Read my previous comment. There are 2000 Lira to the Euro approximately and the metal was worth more than the exchange value. The Dutch used to collect them for putting in Guilder parking meters (same size and weight), propping up furniture. and making washers.. What I said regarding Italy joining the Eurozone also applies to Ireland to some extent. Watch this space.......
