It's quite an old farmhouse i am moving into and we tried a fire in the old fireplace and found smoke in the attic and coming out half way up the chimney stack. I didn't want to spend the money but I think it's the most practical thing for our situation, i think of it as sealing the smoke in and protection for my family as well as reinforcement and strength bieng added to a big part of my house.
We have totally knocked down one gable end and fitted a new concrete spun liner. That wasn't that cheap either.

i'm about half way through that pile of logs atm, but won't be a shortage of logs after a little fencing job popped up ;-) new 1 to do down wood side so had a few dead trees and over hanging branches cut out along with the old thorn hedge, by the time it's all cut and split up there must be atleast 20 ton of logs, then got delivery of 48 packs of compressed sawdust logs FOC from local parish fund set up off near by wind farm, had some last winter aswell so already know how good they are

they put money into a parish fund that gets used for various projects and bits n bobs, 1 of which is these compressed logs or any 1 without fire can have £100, another thing is we get some led light bulbs FOC aswell

Was that a condition of the wind farm planning permission - to soften up the locals?

And why not indeed - it's good if others besides the land owner and the government benefit. ;)

not sure but there's a fair chunk of cash comes in every year from them, students in the parish can apply for grants to help with studies, local school is getting a biomass boiler fitted and looking into getting fiber optic broadband routed through the village, but that wont help the houses outside the village :-(

The stove I fitted in my bungalow was better than the open fire with back boiler.

but at the farmhouse, we fitted a stove in place of the open fire and it wasn't as good IMO. The old open fire seemed to throw a lot more heat out, and the chimney being massive and big enough to climb up inside, acted like a storage heater and stayed warm keeping the upstairs rooms warm. Now, the miserly stove with its elf n safety liner doesn't seem to radiate half as much heat out into the room and the insulated liner means the chimney and the rooms above are stone cold. A bit disappointed tbh.

But what is the fuel consumption now compared to before?
